Just read an article about freighters using a form of sail to help cut down fuel usage. I don't think that will become the new rage but the article also suggested that shipping companies were going to institute some new cost saving measures. First and foremost, they will save the most fuel BY GOING SLOWER! As fuel costs continue to escalate, companies will be looking at ways to save money wherever they can. On a similar note, I received an email from Royal Caribbean cruses last year. It basically said that they were adding a $5/day surcharge/ passenger to cover increases in fuel costs.

I wonder if the extra labor costs associated with a longer duration crossing will outweigh the fuel cost savings.
