the best DIY Semi Permanent Coating: Opti, CQUK, 22ple?
Hey folks,
Looking to leverage some knowledge here... I've done quite a bit of research on the semi permanent coatings and am still having a hard time deciding between the CQuartz UK, the Optimum Gloss Coating and the 22ple coating. All look to be great products. Keep in mind that I will be applying this over an Xpel Ultimate treatment as well, don't know if that has any bearing on the decision. I will be doing this coating myself... I have pretty extensive experience doing details... I used to do it for a side job and did it as a hobby for car shows as well. I want a coating that is relatively easy to install as well, but results and longevity are the main concerns for me. I am receiving my vehicle on Friday and will have Xpel installed next weekend. I will be starting a thread going over the entire process of how to receive and properly prepare a new car for long lasting paint protection. My car is Black Sapphire Metallic |

I don't have any experience with 22ple but I've seen CQ done and did opt gloss coat on mine. The OGC is the easiest to apply. With CQ there's also the extra step of putting reload on afterwards.
I used the CarPro foam block applicator and micro suede cloth. Just wipe it on in a cross hatch, and buff off with a microfiber towel. It flashes pretty slow. And the microfiber towel wipes off the high spots with extremely light pressure and one swipe. I did about a 2x3 foot section at a time. Not sure about the longevity, as that will vary greatly with care and maintenance afterwards, and OGC has not been out too long, but I believe their claim of 2 years. Also, it looks better than opticoat2.0 IMO. More glossy Don't think u can go wrong with any of them, really. And in about 2 years you can try a different one. |

I've used all 3 and think all of them are great and you can't really go wrong. For me, I prefer CQuartz UK. I found it the easiest to work with and I found it shed dirt the best. I also like Reload (which is used during application and can be used after to bring out gloss and top up the coating (almost like a quick detailer)... I find it works exceptionally well and is REALLY slick and beads like nuts. The two match well.
I can't speak to durability as I always polish and re-coat my car in the Spring so I never have a coating on it for more than a year... and they ALL out last that if applied properly.

Wash Clay Wash Polish Eraser CQUK Reload Takes about a day (6 to 8 hours) if done properly... but really worth it from a results perspective. You could skip the clay/polish if your car is perfect but I would bet it isn't. If you put a plastic bag over your hand and gently run it across the paint you will feel all kinds of contaminants, etc. You need to clay the car to remove those... and then a polish to get the paint perfect before the coating. OCD, yes. Worth it? YES!!

I did opti coat pro on my 335i 2 years ago, the day after I bought it. It was still beading water like nuts and protecting from swirls the day I sold it last month. Most of these semi-permanent coatings will be good for 2-3 years, then you polish and re-apply.

22PLE was my 2nd favourite after CQUK. They worked very similarly and, to be honest, I'm CQUK. Maybe because I like all of the complimentary products (Reload, etc) that work well together. 22PLE is a great product.

I had a guy who normally installs CQF wash my car last week which has OGC on it. He was very impressed and actually said it looked like the OGC was doing a better job.

My F80 is at the detailer since Monday. I am getting a full front XPel, then Ceramic Pro 9H. They are also applying some tint. I pick up on Friday. I had Opticoat 2.0 on my 2014 335i and loved the results. Adam at 5pointdetail.com stated that they moved to Ceramic Pro 9H due to the higher shine and more durable coat. They apply 5 total layers.
They even posted a photo of my car, lol. https://instagram.com/p/0WIvyWKJVN/ I pick up on Friday. Very excited to get her back. Only 250 on the odometer. |
