Headlight Auto Sensors

Wonder if anyone can help? Over the weekend (and again this morning) I seem to be the only vehicle with headlights turned on. I have Xenons and they're switched to auto. My issue is that they seem to be on even when it's bright outside. Other BMWs etc, which I assume many of which also have light sensors were just on DRLs.

There's no errors on the dash but I'm wondering if I have a faulty light sensor? I assume it's behind the mirror housing and I've checked (assuming that's where it is) that it's clean and nothing's blocking it. The dials are still orange in the car, but the black panel display was white/blue this morning. Unfortunately at work I can't just nip to the car to check and as my return journey is at about 5:30 it'll probably be going darker so I can't do any definite testing myself until this weekend! Anyone got any clues?

Cheers

Generally with low sun the headlights will be on even if it's quite light. The sensitivity is adjustable but only by coding.

Don't forget that sensor also turns headlights on in bright conditions.

Which is a good thing. When the sun is low in the sky in front of you and very bright it can be difficult to see oncoming traffic when they don't have their lights on. Few drivers consider this, but luckily the automatic systems do - so getting better all the time!

The sun may be low and bright, but the Lux value can still be low. Just appears brighter than it is as our eyes have adjusted. It's always been like this with BMW auto headlights and I feel they are on and off at exactly the right time.

And also, I am a firm believer that just because you're the only one doing something, that it doesn't mean you're wrong! You could literally be a beacon of common sense to everyone around you!

It actually says in the handbook that the lights will come on in bright sunlight.

+1

One of reasons we have driving lights on new cars is due to muppets not putting any lights on when it's crap Vis, such as rain, dusk but street lights not lit etc.

I routinely press my adaptive button on stalks first thing in morning, sone days I get a green light, others I don't and not much real different tbh.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Diving home tonight the lights stayed off for about the first 2 or 3 miles and then came on as it suddenly went dark and started to rain. Seems like, as was said above, they probably stayed on this morning as although the sun was very bright it was very low, so probably was actually being very clever in making the car more visible. Once again, thanks for all the advice, help and vast shared knowledge. Cheers
