Wheel Widths
It seems like most of the aftermarket wheels for this car comes in either a 8/9 inch setup or an 8.5/9.5 inch setup. Is the 1/2 inch difference between the two noticeable in person? And is there a reason why certain manufacturers use an 8/9 inch setup while others are capable of using an 8.5/9.5 inch setup? I would think that having a wider wheel is more ideal. Any information would be great, thanks!

A wider wheel is more ideal for putting power down (due to allowing the use of a wider tyre) and also improves handling if run at the front in a wider set up. The issue with the 2 and 1 series is that the wheel wells are very shallow and aren't best suited for running massive width wheels and tyres without fender rolling to improve clearance.
18X8.5” ET45 Front with 235/40/18 and 18X9.5” ET58 Rear with 265/35/18 should fit the 2 series without (much) issue provided you choose a tyre that doesn't run too wide of the wheel. Some tyres whilst being the same width on paper will actually fit on a rim slightly wider than others. The michelin PSS i believe are known for being a wider fit (something to do with the shoulder design) than some others of the same width....if that makes sense. So whilst an extra 1/2 inch is the most beneficial selection, you have to consider clearance and also probably additional weight and/or cost if you go with a lightweight forged alloy to compensate. Edit: There are a few threads with other members who've taken several different approaches with offset and wheel choice to run a wider than stock set up. |
