Beware of software upgrades

Had my car coded for a few minor things, however after a software update (which I asked the dealer to do), I now have an uncodeable car.

No loss as I didn't have anything major that had been lost, but for all those people who decide not to buy EBT and plan to code, be warned you may lose it for ever!

A helpful dealer may do an upgrade without telling you, for example and think it's a nice thing to do.

Motto is to always buy options like EBT as you may lose it in the future!

On the plus side, iDrive is a lot better now after the upgrade and BT streaming works better too - I'm happier post-upgrade, although I would like junction view on my HUD.

Out of Interest what improvements are there on the i-drive specifically please?

Due to take mine in for a service in a couple of weeks and makes sense to ask for mine to be updated.

Garage List
If the BMW's are anything like Audi's, when they are connected at the dealership they connect back to Germany. The car modules are checked against original build specs. If any of those modules have changed or different, even by an innocent thing like fitting an aftermarket towbar, the module concerened gets locked. The coding then has to be entered manually to take into account of any changes.

This is the danger of coding cars yourself.

When you push the controller in map mode, you get options like stop guidance, repeat spoken directions, status on/off. Connected Drive services are renamed and more CD apps like being able to text/email car location. Not been through all menus yet but seems a bit snappier in general.

Main reason for me was to allow me to update the media system software to allow BT streaming to show album art and track time progress.

I hadn't lost coding when I took the car in for a service, just when I asked them to upgrade. The upgrade removed/hides the data you need to code - @shawnsheridan in the coding forum here said that the car can't be coded and that BMW are doing this more now - quite possibly new build cars will be this way by default so it makes sense to buy stuff like EBT rather than hoping to code and finding you can't use functions for the length of your lease/ownership etc.

+1

As with most helpful features to ensure our cars are ok, it likely carries out a baseline check of the cars config and build.

Also a good way to clamp down on too many 3rd party stuff.

Is shawn certain that you won't be able to code your car? Is it not just a case of waiting for the correct version of psdzdata to be available?

Certainly looks like it will be uncodeable due to trimming of CAFD files

I don't think this will affect coding EBT, as it is done by VO coding, not FDL coding.

Hmmm

Depressing as I've just recently made my cable! I want to code video in motion and a couple of other things. I presume it won't be much different from me coding EBT which I managed..?

Had mine upgraded the other week and now I can't upload music to HD - I no longer have an 'import' option
With this in mind, I'm hoping there's an update to the update coming soon!!

Have you had the car updated by the dealer recently then?

Clearly that's a bug. I'd be asking them to revert to the old version as you're losing stock functionality there...

I'll check mine for the HD import option - mind you do you need a CD/USB stick in the car to see the option, as I always use my iPhone.

They don't touch the software in a service. You currently have & will have no problems with coding.

As I understand it a software upgrade is usually done overnight at the dealership so is not done when a routine service is carried out.

Mine wasn't upgraded until I specifically asked for it, so perhaps they won't do it automatically.

Mine was only in having rear lights changed (condensation) so can't see why they had reason to connected anyway.....
No drama, I've got nothing to hide but does seem odd.

Does anyone know what the upgrade is actually for?
I've noticed the new menu giving you option to stop guidance, repeat instructions ect but nothing else.
