Off-topic: Autocar article on keyless theft

http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/in...ar-without-key

One of the better articles I've read. It's making me think about doing an OBD relocate and fitting a tracker.

Interesting article. They seem to put more emphasis on it being more prevalent on cars with proximity detection, eg Comfort Access. Though also point out about blocking the signal from your fob so you think you've closed it but haven't.

TBH I always check either the red light is flashing, or my mirrors are folded (meaning it must be locked) before walking away....

Anyone got any recommended tracking devices? Best type / cost per month / impact on insurance quotes etc?

An OBD port lock seems like a simple way to make a thief's life more difficult, but I haven't been able to find a suitable product.

I have Acoustic Lock Confirm enabled so I get an audible beep(s) when the car is locked/unlocked.

Folding mirrors is a great confirmation the car is locked.

Sorry but certainly in the case of BMW and JLR cars, this article is completely flawed. The irony is that cars with Comfort Access are, if used wisely, way more secure.

The signal transmitted for recognising the key is in range is incredibly short and you would literally have to be on top of the person to intercept it. As long as you always unlock/lock the car using the handles rather than the remote, it is nigh on impossible to gain access to the car unless forcing entry.

Problem is with these Range Rovers is people are still using the remotes to lock/unlock. Christ anyone with a bit of intelligence need only wait in Fulham/Kensington Waitrose car park and you'll get one mummy with hands full point remote at car to lock. No point in stealing there as CCTV. So you just wait and follow home. Then take at your own discretion.

One of my friends is a senior engineer at JLR and confirmed that by only using Comfort Access and touching car and never pressing remote, you're pretty safe. There are always others who will use remote. Wife is under specific instructions with any of our cars (which are BMW and JLR and all have Comfort) to never ever use remote buttons.

So there you go. It's actually the keyless issue rather than Comfort Access and by having to use your remote to open and close (which does have a fair range), you're more exposed.

Touch wood, all cars so far still not nicked!

Tracking devices are good, however these people have jammers and tracker (mobile) locators. Actually quite cheap off ebay etc.

I use the fact my mirrors fold and if dodgy area, pull handle - like we used to do in years gone past.

I think the cheapest way is to hide a cheap old iphone in the car somewhere on a really cheap contract, then you can use Find My iPhone or various different apps to track it.

Again it is very simple finding a mobile.

The only way would be if you could remote power it up, even standby is traceable.

By that time car has a couple of mobile jammers fitted.

Step 1.

Check if car has GPS / GPRS etc tracker fitted, approx locations, fit jammer(s).

Step2

- some place quiet, remove trackers and recheck for any new signals.

Yeah I'm not saying its infallible, just that its way cheaper than trackers! As for remote power up, then it would still be sort of active anyway polling for the wake up signal!

Talking of keyless theft and car theft in general, the R is being stolen left right and centre. Ten have been stolen this week alone.

One poor owner was attacked in a petrol station, his keys taken by 2 blokes with face masks and hoods. The poor battered guy only had the car for 3 weeks! Needles to say he is in a terrible state both physically and emotionally. Made me sick to my stomach when I read about this. Bloody bastards.

I always knew Nicky Baby had good taste.

As for the Lurker, well with a name like that he should be arrested immediately, thrown into the clink and the keys thrown away. Filthy bugger.

Yeah, that sucks that, seen it happen.

Also had a bloke come up to me asking if this Range Rover (I think) was mine, was not, however I fall back on my poor hard done to Geordie routine, as would be used to sell big issue.

Up where my sister lives a couple a years ago they were kicking in doors pointing guns and taking keys n car.

So, I don't mind to much keyless entry and even leave my keys on clear view on kitchen unit saves anyone waking me up for them.... Although for some reason I left an ice axe down side of bedside unit....

Garage List
Couple of simple ish solutions
1) insurance
2) gap insurance
3) physical security - quite fond of the bullock- locks the pedals and stood upto a long time of noisy battering when tested by auto express.
4) common sense.
