Depends if you're in warranty or not. While in warranty, i did in between dealer "freebie" changes using either the dealer Castrol SLX 5W-30 or Mobile 1 ESP 5W-30. There is another thread where guys are using Shell Rotella T6 5W-40. I can't give you a recommendation to go to the thicker 5W-40 though. TDI seems to be doing fine with it. Dealer oil is changing we have heard. I just bought a bunch of the Mobile 1 ESP on sale at Pepboys. $38 for 5 L with a Mobile 1 filter. You do this twice to get 10 L as you need 8L for a change. I got filters for the other cars in my family in the 2 times i did it. I got the 335D specific filter last pep boys sale and it looked a little different than the OEM filter so I didn't use it and staying OEM on the filter front. The pepboys deal is for the month of March. If you're just now hearing of sale, you might be too late as the VW/TDI guys jump on this when it comes around.

They don't really publish any ACEA specs, although there are indications that one of them is ACEA A3/B3-4 - which is similar to BMW's LL-01 spec. However, without saying "low-saps" or ACEA A3/B3-4/C4, you're possibly toasting your catalysts and DPF. The DPF costs $2500 and the SCR Cat costs $1200 - is it worth using a non-approved oil? I'm using Pentosin's LL-04 product. Motul Specific makes a good LL-04 oil. The BMW Castrol SLX Professional is about as cheap as you can get; why bother with other stuff? |

Stick with a low saps LL04 unless you have removed DPF etc...
I grabbed Pennzoil 5w30 Euro S via Amazon which is likely what the new BMW branded oil will end up being as its an LL04 5/30 from SOPUS. Of course dealers have a stock of the older Castrol and that may stick around a while depending on their service department. With free shipping I loaded up from Amazon for 3 oil changes so I'm good for another 20-25K miles. Filters: OEM or Mahle can be had easily from Amazon or your favorite vendor, even the dealer. - b |

mann filter HU 721/4
I did the Pepboys oil special that i mentioned earlier and the 335D filter they had looked different on the end. It didn't have an embedded rubber seal along the inner diameter. See link.
http://www.carid.com/mann-filter/met...y3axoCO2vw_wcB I was doubting so I used the OEM filter which has a rubber end seal. Anyone used this and it was okay OR should i toss it? Next link is the filter with rubber seal on end like OEM part. http://www.bavauto.com/lview.asp?img...1427788460.jpg What's wierd is this is also a Mann 721/4X. Mine doesn't have the x on the end part number. Last edited by BB_cuda; 03-21-2015 at 01:55 PM.. |

I have used the Pentosin (paid $45 for 5 liter bottle) and Mobil1 ESP (paid full price previously, just stocked up with the Mobil1 rebate offer). As I am still under warranty and only perform the off-interval changes, I have opted to only use oil that carries the BMW LL-04 rating. Not worth the hassle to save a few bucks on oil and run the risk of losing warranty.
I use WIX filters that look very similar to the OEM filter I have removed twice now. |

I have been using Total Quartz INEO MC3 5W30. It meets BMW LL04 Standard. I purchase it online, because haven't found it local. Been using it for about 80K miles and have been very pleased. I change the oil/filter every 8K miles.

Why not use the new BMW LL-04 spec oil which is made by Shell and comes in 1L bottles. The part number is 83 21 2 365 949 and is a 5w30 weight. I bought a case of 12 for around $95 at the dealer with the tax and my CCA discount. So two cases will give you three oil changes with some extra as the 335D takes 8 quarts or 7.5 liters. So you would have 1.5L extra between the two cases for slight top offs. I would even do 5000 mile oil changes and use a good oil filter.

I'm not really worried about price. I just want to be sure the LL04 isn't compromised in the name of protecting emissions equipment I no longer have.

From what I think I remember TDIwyse writing somewhere on here...
LL04 Low Ash, required for DPF longevity LL01 Fine if you've deleted the DPF. You'll have to search for clarity, though. Last edited by Built4Sin; 03-24-2015 at 01:25 AM.. Reason: Spelling.... |
