road trip to the ring- any tips...?

So the freshly delivered 330d s drive and the brother in laws m135i are about to embark on a trip to 'the ring'. Dover to Calais and then perhaps see the war graves, though Belgium then down to the ring. Perhaps drive down to the Black Forest (route 500) then the Rhine vally..

Any other places that you would recommend?

Thinking about it but will probably hire one of the pugs for 200 euros with insurence etc... It's the same money for track day insurence... We will see... Have you driven it?

Also go round in a Ring taxi.

If you are staying a while, it's worth hiring an instructor. Rent4ring has some good English instructors

I was going to say 'very good insurance' but the Pug option will do nicely

I'd second all of this. Much though it would be great to take your own car round the ring, I would never do it now due to the insurance (and potentially warranty) situation.
I reckon you'd be far less nervous in one of the (sensibly priced) rental options available in the village.

In terms of where to stay nearby, the Am Tiergarten in nurburg is fantastic. Sensible price, great food and drink, and you may see Sabine as her mum owns it. The punters cars are mostly parked outside, and no matter what you turn up in, there will be even more tasty machinery parked outside.

Oh, and if you drive down the motorway that goes past Spa in Belgium, keep going that way towards the ring, and just after you cross the german border it goes to a 2 way road, for about 10km, and after that keep going, as it turns into what I reckon is the quietest bit of deristricted autobahn in the whole of Germany (and it's even slightly downhill if you're going south, it's virtually straight, and there's a long stretch with no junctions) just in case you want to see what your car's speed limiter really works at!

There was a thread on this a few months back, worth a search.

Hire car to do a few laps and then make a call whether you want to take your own one on.

If you've done any track days here and so know what you're doing then you'd probably be fine...

Thanks chaps great advise. Never done track day and may pre book a pug to drive the ring as the temptation to drive 330d may be to hard to resist when we get there....

I did, in my last car - first time was mid-week so only had locals on the track and most recent was on a Sunday after a VLN race and I was one of the first on. In both cases, the track was relatively quiet and not full of tw*ts.

Plan to go again this year on the way to BMW Welt or maybe after a VLN race. So far, not driven in this car, which will be slightly different compared to a Pug 308

Took my car to 150mph on unrestricted autobahn, felt very safe and secure - did this speed for 10 mins or so but caught up to other cars and it was only a two-lane AB so had to slow down.

On the one hand you will be tempted, on the other, you want to get back home again - it's not like the M1!

You in a 3d?

You do know it can go faster than that right?

330d yes - there was other traffic on the road so kept having to slow down/speed up (leaving sufficiently big enough gaps, as well).

Aye. It is a bummer having to do that.

And surprisingly the majority of people on roads like that are not all trying to break the world land speed record.

A lot of them are driving at normal speeds, and although their lane discipline is far better than ours, you still will get twats that don't know they have mirrors.

Agree - German driving standards are so much better than over here. Belgian and Dutch however - atrocious!

Sixt do decent hire rates for M cars over in Germany.

We tend to pick one or two up when flying in and need a hire car

I only get in trouble with the fuel costs lol.
