I just replaced my battery last week with an Advanced Auto Parts battery and then registered it with the BMWhat app. I was pretty scared of the whole process but it was actually really easy and at ~$72 for the app and registry add-on it was way cheaper than having the dealer or even an indy do it.

Your car does not like the battery because originally it was not an AGM. You have to code the ecu to accept the battery as an AGM and then register it. The dura last gold battery is a very good battery and I was able to register it with no issues.

You can register your battery quickly using the free software Bmwlogger. You just need a USB-to-OBDII cable to connect your laptop to the car (like $20 on ebay)

That said, if you are putting in a battery with different specs (capacity, amps, AGM/lead) then you need to CODE your car before you REGISTER your battery.

CODING refers to programming your car to know the specs of your battery so that it can charge and monitor it accordingly (these cars have a 'smart' charging system).
REGISTERING your battery just informs your car that a brand new battery with 100% of it's lifespan remaining has been installed.

Many people have differing opinions on how important it is to do either of these steps. I think BMW will tell you that if you do not register a battery, or register a battery that was not the same specs as the original it might not perform well or last as long as it could.

Hope that helps.

the bmwwhat app is pretty slick.. it can code and register the battery.

the trick is the get the same AH...

i think mine was 90... the agm is 80... so i will just use it... there duralast with 92 agm... but the closest bmw code is 90... don't want to risk screwing something up.

will try it over the weekend and post results...
