M Performance LSD - can it work on 320i/328i?

So we know the M-Performance LSD is a bolt-in replacement for the stock rear diff on 235, 335, and 435, manual or auto. Can it work on a 320i or 328i, despite BMW not listing it as such?

As to the answer of this question, it would largely depend on if there are sizing differences between the rear ends on 320s/328s and 335s. Is the differential casing the same, just with beefier internals? Are the rear half-shafts beefier on the 35i models versus the 20i and 28i models? And then, if the rear half-shafts ARE beefier, can they still bolt into a 20i or 28i?

For those looking for the most "pure" driving experience (like myself with my forth-coming 320i RWD), being able to bolt in the MP LSD, and even 35i half-shafts, seems like a win-win.

Thanks.

I believe you can only install the M Performance LSD on an automatic F3x, there isn't any option for manual transmissions which sucks... I don't know if it'll fit on a 320i/328i though.

It is only designed for the 8 step automatic. However all mounting holes are the same on the chasis so what happens if you just install it on a manual i don't know. Some of the surround parts have the same sparepart number and some not so some additional parts are for certain needed if this should work. The exchange rate is the exact same for the open diff and the LSD so all in all there is a chance that it mechanically works.

There is one thing I am certain of that most likely will cause you problems. I just had the LSD installed and I followed the proces. As a part of that the car had to be coded in order to have all systems work correct. I am also sure that BMW is not having the options in their system to code the LSD into a 20i/28i. For example they didn't have the options of coding LED into my fog lights but other BMW-coders can.

Is it a chance worth of trying? You decide. Maybe you could get some help by asking Quaife. They have options for 28i/35i and might know if theirs would fit onto the 20i.

The 328i and 335i uses according to http://etk.cc the same final drive (parts# 33107603749) so there it is just a replacement. The 316i, 318i and 320i has a different final drive (part#33107603747).

Even if the parts can simply be swapped, in my mind, it is no longer worth the hassle. If the rear axles are beefier, chances are the rear hubs are as well.

Which explains why 0-60mph times dont vary that much between 328 and 335. But that has nothing to do with the physical size of the casing. That's just the internal gearing. I'd imagine the 320 has a shorter final drive to counteract the lower power output...so theorhetically, an LSD equipped 320 might accelerate slower...but thats what JB4 is for.
