Seatbelt Harness?

Does anyone know of a seatbelt harness for e9x's? Do you need racing seats? Are there ones that can hook on to stock?

First you have to ask why do you need a harness system. Are you planning on tracking your car or auto-x'ing it?

Harnesses have to be installed a special way in order to be effective in providing additional safety compared to a normal belt. If you opt for a 4 point harness you have to make sure it has an anti-submarine system. SCHROTH is the only company I know of that has this. It is also the only 4 point harness I am aware of that is DOT legal.

Otherwise you will be looking for a 5-6 point harness. Both the 4, 5, and 6 point harnesses have to be mounted at certain angles and distances from the seat. More then likely you will have to have a racing seat and harness bar/roll bar to meet these requirements.

It takes a bit of work to properly implement a harness system in your car. Of course if you don't care about safety and only want people to think you are "cool" people find ways to bolt them up using stock seats and mounts. Your best bet would be to find a reputable racing shop who has done this many times and knows the proper ways of mounting harness systems in cars. My manual for my racing harnesses was about 50 pages long detailing all the proper ways to mount it and care for it after its installed.

+1 on Kanos' comments. Unless you are going all out, you will be safer with no harness system than a cobbled together one.

BTW, I do driving schools and open track days with no harness. I'd love to have one for better feedback, but I'm not willing to put a bar in my car and not willing to put a harness in without.

Kanos -- I haven't heard of the SCHROTH 4 point harness you mention. What are your thoughts on that?

I've contacted Schroth already 8 months ago asking when they would release their 4-point harness for the new E9x.

Not before 2008 they said back then.

The really nice thing about the schroth is that it can work together with your existing belt, and that you can take out the scroth in just 30 seconds when you won't need it for a while (ex daily driving, or passengers on the back seat)

The exact name is: Schroth QuickFit ASM (located under tuning, rallye belts)

Sabelt does make a 4 point Auto-X harness. But as Kanos said it works only in certain angles and lengths. I'm also into adding belts to my car for those track days.

PCA will not allow a 4 point this year. And if you use a 5 point the seat has to have been made to accept the 5 point.

That said you really need to think about the down side of a 5 point in a car with no head neck restraint. In a hard frontal crash your body will be constrained and your head will doing it's best bobble head imitation, not good.

On the other hand with the factory harness you are in a 'system' designed to protect you.

Schroth 4-point Harness for 335i?

I was at a BMW/Porsche track day last weekend and one of the guys had a Schroth 4-point harness in his 135i coupe. I sat in the car and it was pretty slick. I went on line and Schroth does not show that they make one for the 335i or 135i. I tried calling them, but they are closed for the day. Does anyone know if they are making them for the 335i or 135i's?
