$260 BMW dealership oil service?

My 335d was last serviced by BMW on 7.8.2014 at 38,062 miles. The mileage counter is at 4,900 today...and the mileage is 46,100. That would put me at 51,000 miles for the next oil change due. Can I bring it to the BMW dealership at 49,9xx miles for a final oil change under the warranty? Or will they make me wait until 51,000 miles - 1,000 miles outside of the warranty?

My in-service date was 11.8.2011. I should be at 49,9xx miles well before the 11.8.15 warranty expiration date.

The dealership quoted me the following:

"Oil Change, which comes with a diesel exhaust fluid fill up, cost $259.00 + tax,ss."

$260 sounds crazy! Has any 335d diesel driver had any luck with the $79 BMW Value Service Oil Change, for 3-series vehicles outside of warranty?

I guess it depends on the dealer, but I expect they aren't going to do it for free unless they think it might benefit them in the future. I have the same situation. I will be out of the initial plan on 2 May 2016, but I only have 7,500 miles or so to get there. I am sure I won't get a CBS notification for an oil change in that time.

That's a good deal, assuming they provide you some lube as well.

Oil changes are supposed to be once per year even if low on miles. But you wouldn't get the DEF filled unless miles were high enough since last time. At least that is the way it's handled at my dealer

I didn't read OP's question well. Oil is every 10,000 miles or one year which ever comes first. If you just slack off driving a little you can get next change on 7/8/15 and be under 50k

There is a 2000 mile included range. So when you are close to 50k take it to the dealer and do a key reader. It will show either due or recommended.

I called around for quotes from the stealerships and kept getting quotes for about $290. I referenced the value special you mentioned. Eventually I was told about $120... I drove to the dealership and called again to confirm after going back and forth they confirmed. We hung up as I was pulling into the parking lot. I went in and they told me $290. I explained everything and refused to put my car in the long service line until I had an absolute cost.

They told me the $120 was a quote to just change the oil filter... I called bs and asked for the service manager. He did "research" and can back with $112 (give or take) for just the oil change and filter change. They were even going to top off or whatever the Def fluid which I refused because it was just done. Key was reset as well..

Anyways be persistent and if you need me to send you a copy of the service let me know.

Btw I'm in socal - inland empire
Also- the $290 is supposed to cover Def and air filter and cabin filter oil and oil filter; so they say...

Mine is still under cpo warranty but out of maint. plan.

The 335d oil service interval is 13,000 miles...I'd be due just over 50k. I was mostly wondering if they'd take care of it at 49,999...just short of 13,000 miles. from what I've read here, it looks like they will . Thanks.

I'll ask about the value service when I take it in and report back here. Thanks.

OP

that's the ongoing rate at the dealer.
Try to do it yourself (oil, filter, and DEF). then add some labor and see where you end up.
Oil changes do not fall under the warranty, but rather under the free maintenance provided by BMW.

I believe my SA once told me you can get the oil changed if you're within 2000 miles of the interval due date, or you will reach within 2000 miles that month based on average mileage driven.

You should be able to get about 2 fuel filter changes within the 50k maintenance plan as well.

I was just quoted "at most $10-15 more than the [$79] value service price"

Initially they said $290 with DEF and $240 without. The dealer said they don't honor that $79 price even though our cars are not excluded from the list explicitly. "Our car uses more oil" was the BS line I got. Eventually they offered me an oil change at "cost of parts" plus $30 labor which turned out to be ~$120. NO DEF.

I paid $170 when I had dealership perform the first oil change outside of the 4 year maintenance. I have since done it myself.

Oil (8 quarts) and OEM filter cost right at $100. DEF is pretty cheap and easy to fill.

I paid like $120 for an oil and filter change. I do the DEF myself and the air filter.

I figure 8 quarts of oil and a filter will cost me close to $90. It would take me over an hour to do it and clean up. Why not let the dealer do it and give me a loaner for a day that I can go on a nice long drive somewhere with.

Me too my dealer charge $120~130 for the oil change. I do the DEF myself, air filter myself, can air filter myself, lol. Pretty much anything I can myself I do. Except the oil change. At ~$120 its worth for them to do it, since the materials alone are pretty pricey.

Nope, that won't happen unless they eat the mistake.

The LL04 oil cost and filter cost delta is about $20 MSRP. I agree it should be say 99-119 for just an OC, but no one seems to get that. Dealers don't like the $79 program: its low margin, but brings people into the dealership.

My dealer charged me $200 and I *brought* my own LL04 oil, so normally would be 250 or so. I gave them a shot, won't do it again. They automatically put a gal of DEF in, I never asked them to do so and I ate the cost of that (I had recently topped it off myself for $15...)

The DEF (OEM Kruse) via BMW parts is waaaaay over priced and that drives the overall service cost well above 200. If you want the same stuff, get it from the VW parts counter. Even MB is much cheaper then BMW.

So the quote is actually reasonable when you consider all that is going on,
and a healthy margin

To me the best strategy is buy your own parts, take it to an indy, pay them 30m labor and drive home, if you don't want to DIY.

$120 seems quite reasonable considering the cost of parts alone will run you between $80 and $90 depending on how good of a deal you get on oil

I buy DEF from my auto parts store, auto zone or wherever. I even bought from home depot once cause it was cheap. I then use the BMW bottle to refill with since it has the adapter i need.

To refresh my post:

2011 335d - no maintenance plan

Indy shop cost:~$120

BMW on 4/12/15: $112.42

This included:8qts/oil filter/fill DEF fluid as needed/multi-point inspection/tire pressure check/car wash (the def fluid was just changed due to warranty issue with tank, so I decli it last minute. Ultimately it's included in the cost)

Parts cost:

Oil filter: 21.99
Oil: 8.27 ea. (same as what they would charge me to buy and take home)

Totals:
Parts: 88.15
Labor: 17.22
+tax
Grand total: 112.42

that's fantastic! thanks so much for your information. was this your BMW dealership's regular price for the diesel oil service or a special? did you have to ask for the 'value service' plan? $112.42 is more than reasonable!

thanks again.
