Car Seat opinions?

Hey all,

So I have my first kid on the way, due near the end of the summer. While doing our registry yesterday, my wife and I had a huge problem deciding on a stroller/car seat travel system. my E90 isn't the most spacious and I hate when the person in the passenger seat has to move up to the point of blocking my peripheral.
Any suggestions on car seats that are good, easy to secure and, and easy to get out, BUT don't take up much space in the back seat? I'll take anything into consideration. If anyone has a way that I may be able to measure that might help too!

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately I say...good luck. We went with about the smallest seat we could find and it doesn't make a difference. In the end get what is going to be the safest for your child. I got over it quick. If it really bothers you then may just need a bigger car for about 8-10 years!

We have the Cybex Aton Q and love it. I have a base in my E92 and one in my wife's E90. It's an infant seat so it's on the smaller side, but you will still have to move the seat up. E9X just is not very big, 2 door or 4 door. The problem I will run into is the in between phase of growing out of an infant seat and still needing to be rear facing in an E92. It doesn't get easy until they're 2 years old and facing forward.

Yeah, good luck is about it. With rear facing seats you will have to move the passenger seat forward no matter which one you choose. I had a Keyfit30 in my e93 and the passenger seat had to be all the way forward + pretty much upright (no recline). Afterwards with front facing you will have more flexibility.

And you're not the only one. I borrowed my friends car (Audi S4) for a couple of days and even without the base the Keyfit30 needed the passenger seat to be all the way forward as well.

Oh, and Congratulations!!!

I would find something that has good safety reviews, pretty much most of them will fit on the back seat of any car.

I've used this one, it worked great (Used in VW Golf, BMW 328 E90, Subaru Legacy - no space issues).
You can pick up an extra base if you switch between the cars.

I concur. Do what's best for your child not the passenger. But I do know what you mean though.

Try the Keyfit 30, when my daughter was born, we had an Audi A3 and a Jetta, this was the only seat that fit in both cars with room for a front seat passenger. Another small one is the Maxi-Cosi Mico, a friend got one of them in the back seat of a Mini somehow.
You can also go straight to a convertible seat... without the removable base, it might be easier to get it in the car, at the expense of not being able to take the seat out with a sleeping baby in it.
Don't worry about matching the stroller to the car seat. You'll be better off buying the stroller frame for the car seat. They're about $50. Then buy a good stroller at about 6-8 months, when facing forward and seeing the world is of interest to the baby. You'll get a better stroller this way, and wont be tied down when it comes to car seats because the stroller does or doesnt fit in the trunk.

Graco Nautilus. Fits perfect in the back seat and its a 3 in 1 seat. Performs three functions: forward-facing harness, high-back booster, and backless booster. Holds from 20-100 pounds. 5 point harness and my 5 yr old still has some good leg room. Very mobil friendly and looks like a mini Recaro seat lol

Used the Keyfit 30 here too. Picked up multiple bases so that we could easily switch cars. Worked out great. Good luck and congrats!

Chicco keyfit 30. Good for up to 30 pounds. We bought an extra base and the stroller as well. The seat easily moves from car to stroller to floor to table to wherever. The bottom is curved so you can rock your baby to sleep when you bring her inside from the car. Being able to easily move the baby from car to elsewhere without actually pulling her out of the seat when she's sleeping is huge.

Fit in our e90, but did make the front passenger seat a little snug -not unbearably so, though.

Now we use Chicco next fit.

These are higher end options with additional safety features above and beyond the federal requirements, and they are rated for legal use up to 7 or 8 years, iirc.

That is what my son has in his 335i coupe. Well made; it's a system and the car seat comes out and clips into the stroller.

You will need to get a seat for the rear facing infant only, and then switch to a front facing toddler++ front facing only seat. 3-in-1 seats are enormous when mounted rear facing and not as safe for the infant (they are however perfectly safe for front facing toddler and booster). Get one that fits securely with the car as it is the most important. Some rear facing seats have a base that secures with the latch system, and you can just click the seat on the base which is very nice to have, and they also clip in the stroller, that's also very nice.

Don't buy the marketing about the safety of these seats, they are all more or less equivalent. One only caveat when shopping for a front facing seat, in 1/2 years from now, prefer one where the 5 pts harness can be used with larger/older kids (up to 6 or 7). Also check that the belt routing system is not moronic (as it is on some Safety 1st and Echelon products): you want the belt routing to be an horizontal slit at the place where the shoulder of the kid should be. Vertical slit routing are not safe (apply to boosters with a back or 3-in-1 used as boosters).

This is what we have as well. Great seat and very safe. Front seat does not have to be up really. Just need to move up a little to get car seat out.
