Drove the D across the country
2900 miles total. 32mpg average with about 550lbs (including 2 people) worth of stuff in there. It was pretty fun in the mountains; the car had no problems going up those 8% grades. Day by day went something like this:
Day 1: Long Island to Fredericksburg, VA. 353 miles, I do this one a lot to see my parents. 34mpg average. Day 2: VA to Louisville, KY. 601 miles and average 32mpg. Decent bit of mountains in West Virginia and shifted down to 5th gear for the down grades. Car started showing signs of slippage during the inclines. I had 94,000miles at the time. Day 3: KY to Oklahoma City, OK. 761miles and average 33mpg. Mostly flat lands and speeds of 75mph+ the entire way. Not much there in the scenery department. Day 4: OK to Flagstaff, AZ. 870 miles. Pretty daunting trip. Ate some great steak passing through Texas. 30mpg average due to high cross winds in OK and parts of TX. I also was going decently fast the entire way since there is absolutely nothing out there. New Mexico is a sketchy area to be in and the hills are much more substantial than West Virginia's. Day 5: AZ to 29 Stumps, CA: 350 miles and average 32mpg. Same speeds as above until I got into Cali. Fruits and vegetables inspection was a bit awkward. The hills were pretty fun though. We didn't really care to stop at anything scenic, nor really take any pictures of desert and hills. I filled up only twice a day as well. 3 times on day 4 due to the OK-TX high winds stretch.

Just did a 2,699 mile road trip averaging 39.2 mpg. Had the 13-year-old with me so easy on the skinny pedal, 70-80 most of the time, and not a lot of a/c use. Route was DC down to Raleigh/Durham, then Charleston SC, Montgomery, Al, New Orleans, back through Mississippi, Alabama, and up I-81 to DC. World's best road trip car, I'm convinced.

Why'd you use 5th? 6th should have been perfectly fine if your speed was 70mph or above.
Define slippage? Seems as if your D is still running well! |

The transmission is starting to shudder when I put it in reverse, and slightly less when it's in D. The car will sometimes rev up much higher than normal when I downshift up a hill and then it'll catch a second later. The car will have 97,000 miles shortly.

Do you think it could be the torque converter is unlocking for the shift and then locking again soon after?

I don't see why that could be the case. I'm going to bring it in either this weekend or next. I'm not pulling any TCU codes though. It's starting to become more pronounced as I drive out here. I did a fluid/filter change 15k miles ago.
