Question for daily drives with DHP

Hi, I'm considering purchasing a 2016 340i, I want a comfortable ride, with adjust ability. I believe the DHP option is the way to go.

From people that have this option, how often do you adjust your suspension? I foresee myself doing it quite often. I toggle "Sport" off and on my current BMW which does seem to help soften things up for bumps and dips.

And would there be any negative impact on the health of the DHP if you change the settings frequently?

Thanks!

Mine starts in Comfort by default. I switch to Sport mode and usually leave it there for the rest of my drive.

I set (through i-drive) sport mode to be suspension only. So when I switch to sport, the throttle setting remains in comfort. For around town driving I prefer Comfort throttle over Sport throttle. When I want Sport throttle, I simply move the gearshift to the left and away I go.

Exception:

On long trips with long downhill streches I sometimes use Eco Pro mode. The coasting feature is great. I'd love to keep the suspension in sport mode but I haven't figured out how to get the Eco Pro throttle and Sport suspension mode at the same time.

Thanks, that all makes sense.

Do you ever find yourself trying to adjust to compensate for bumps/humps/pot holes or uneven roads?

I use alle the modes actively and would choose this option any time.

Comfort mode is used 90-95% of the time
Eco Pro is used if roads are slippery or when I get new tires/brakes or other stuff that needs a break in period.
Sport mode for chassis only is used during windy seasons in order to have a more stable ride.
Sport mode for powertrain only is only used if i misconfigure my system.
Sport for chassis and powertrain is only used if I want to ride for fun
Sport+ is used when I really want to have fun and on the track.
Traction mode I only use if really need it or if I do performance recordings.
DSC Off mode is really rarely used but I do have fun when I do ;-)

Yes, but not very often. We took a trip to Point Reyes (California) right after I got the car. Some of the roads in the area are horribly bumpy and sport mode was pretty jarring. I switched to comfort mode and it was noticeably smoother. It was a perfect road to demonstrate the remarkable difference between the suspension modes in DHP. In two years I've used comfort mode maybe 10 times and always when the surface was really rough.

I'm a big fan of DHP. I can't wait to ditch the Continental RFTs and see how the modes feel then. I have 20k on my RFTs and they just won't wear out!

I regularly toggle the chassis modes and drivetrain modes.

Love DHP. I am always switching the modes. I'm in comfort and sport most of the time. Only have sport adjusting chassis, not transmission. Probably one of the best features on this car IMHO.

What do you have transmission set at?

The DHP is really one of the few features I'm looking forward to in a 3 - series. So when adjusting settings in the care the suspension is considered the chassis?

You can't have just adjustable suspension. If you have non DHP, sport mode adjusts throttle & Steering. DHP adjusts throttle, steering and shocks. You can seperate chassis & throttle within sport mode.

I thought non-DHP only adjusted throttle and transmission (shift points), and DHP does those two PLUS steering and chassis.

Yes, but with DHP you can change the setting in iDrive so that the SPORT setting is ONLY the chassis or ONLY the throttle/trans, or leave it alone and it will then do both.

There's no additional wear from adjusting these settings (except maybe to the button itself )

The DHP's computer is constantly monitoring wheel position and making adjustments to the damping curve of the shocks all the time while driving. Switching from comfort to sport just applies a different algorithm

So the act of changing from one setting to another's not "wearing" anything, it's more akin to changing the channel on your radio
