How critical is the 1,200 mile service?

Hey guys,

I'm still in Switzerland on European Delivery. My question is about the 1,200 mile service -

How crucial is it to have it done at 1,200 miles or around there? I might be going over a bit as there isn't a BMW dealership very close to me at the moment. From what I understand it's just an oil change a differential fluid change?

P.S. - European Delivery is phenomenal. Will post a write up and pictures later.

This is a good question. I am going to have the same problem as you. I will be doing about 1,600miles on the whole trip. When I asked my SA here about it. He told me it's not a problem to go over. As long as it's not like 3,000 miles.

We're horrible horrible people. We are not worthy of these excellent automobiles.

I finally got mine scheduled. Between having waaaay tooooo much fun with the car, the great weather we've been lately and being busy at work, looks like mine will be done around 2,400 miles. Eeeeek! Who wants to pass up a nice road trip or day out at the park for being stuck at the dealership for an oil change! Not me!!!

Flame suit on!

Shouldn't matter. I guess if you tracked it or redlined it prior to the service, you could cause some problems. Just finish your trip and have them do it at the dealer when it arrives.

Be careful, there's been reports of BMW voiding the warranty of cars that passed the 1200 mile mark with a margin.

Basically you are getting rid of any contamination in the fluids after break in. As far as warranties being voided. I have never heard of that either. But I guess BMW may raise an eyebrow if you do not do your scheduled services or do them VERY late. But even then I still have never heard of that. But other then the oil change there is a slight software change that will enable features like launch control and such.

Falafel, are you bringing it to North Haven?

i was tracking how many miles i was putting on the M3 since i got it. and made an estimate on the day that i would likely hit 1200 and scheduled the appointment.

i came up short tho. had my break-in service at 1130 miles.

I remember reading about an E92 M3 in Cali that missed the 1200mi service that had its warranty voided. Of course its all anecdotal, but I can say I did read about this on m3post.

The car still gets hooked up to ISTA and the service is removed via ISTA just like a DCT car. I am unsure what exactly else it does but it is more then just an oil change...

That's what I recall as well. I think it was an early lease return that a member here was interested in purchasing and asked for advice since the 1200 miles service was not done and BMW had pulled the warranty. I've no idea what the policy is but I would never take the chance to go significantly over. If not initial warranty it could cause issues with CPO and drop the value of the car. Why take the risk? Seems lazy.

Exactly. For instance. Lets say for argument sake your standard 3 series gets purchased new. The owner does not do its first oil change until 25,000 miles which is obviously way past due. The warranty is not void. However if he trades the car in, the car cannot be immediately CPO'd because the service was very late. The vehicle needs to be inspected before its cleared to be CPO'd which usually entails removing the valve cover to start, to inspect for abnormal wear. This would be similar if the 1,200 mile service was missed or done very very late.

You don't need to worry about the 1200 service while you're on ED. Even if you run over, BMW will perform the service at the VPC when it arrives back stateside.

Most critical of all. The first 1200 miles is when the oil is most stressed and most break in contaminants.

Maybe in a random rare case but still hard to believe. My E90 M had it done at 3400 miles by the previous owner. Never had any issues with warranty related to the engine.

The warranty was void on that car on m3post because the break in service wasn't done until like 12,000 miles. Which means he forgot about it completely. I asked my friend that's a service advisor and he said don't worry about it unless you are going way way over.

Don't worry about it, as long as your within a reasonable range you will be fine. BMW will take care of the service and any other damage once it hits the port/VDC back in the US.

Now if your talking 3 or 4k in miles, I probably would find someone to do it. Or contact BMW and ask their recommendations to CYA yourself.

However, I did 1500-1600 miles and didn't have any issues from BMW.

I was actually honored that the 1st service would be done at the VDC.

O.. and

Still, why take the risk? The 1200 mile service is at 1200 miles for a reason. BMW do not want to pay for service unless they think it's required to ensure you don't invoke warranty repairs down the line. I find the "don't worry about it" at a minimum very poor advice.

Yes sirreeee!

Oh $&#%, am I in trouble?

I know you will be tempted to share my tales of tardiness with BMW NA first thing Monday morning, whom may in turn void my warranty! Please reconsider! I have a family to feed! I can change, I promise!!! This M3 needs me!!!

I personally found the "don't worry about it" advice to be very reassuring. Weird.

Ok, now 12,000 miles is just reckless. Or ignorant. Maybe both. If I were BMW NA I would have had that car repo'd after 5,000 miles, "south beach tow" style.
