MT Cruising....then shifting into gear
Had a question thought you guys could help me out with. In the mornings when I get on the freeway, once I gain my speed, I usually shift to N and let the car cruise...but I've noticed that when I want to put the car back in gear going at that speed, no matter what gear I try to put it into, it somewhat won't let me. I mean there's definite resistance, and I have to push it in. Is this normal?

What is the advantage of going to neutral? How does it affect the transmission?

Regardles of the situation, it should go into any high gears (3,4,5,6th) without any force

Not too safe... Imagine if you had to react to something.

Depending on which gear you want to shift to, you need to 'blip' the throttle to a certain RPM. Otherwise, it will put a lot of wear & tear on your clutch.
BTW, you shouldn't get any resistance if you put it back in 5th or 6th gear. Quote:

Not entirely true, when engine braking the fuel consumption is zero. When just cruising i.e. not accelerating you are consuming fuel.

wow! don't do that! always keep your car in gear. its not safe to leave it out of gear when you're driving...ESPECIALLY on the highway. you never know when you might encounter a hazard on the road and when you do, you won't have enough time to put your car in gear, and its bad to have the car in neutral when you suddenly need to turn and avoid a hazard. You won't be getting any power to your tires and therefore you won't be able to control and handle the car properly. Even if you think you'll be saving gas, and it might, i honestly don't know, but its just not worth the risk!

Yeah, that is definitely a bad habit, and you are NOT saving any gas so just stop doing that please. When you cruise in neutral and you think you aren't using any gas (which it still is using gas, but even if there was less being consumed), what happens when you need to constantly blip the throttle to put the car back into gear and accellerate again so you can put it back into neutral and cruise. Its retarded to do this IMO.
Mantis, when you are putting the car back into gear you should depress the clutch and then blip the throttle as you are letting the clutch back out, right before the engagement point. Also, it doesn't have to be limited to 2500rpm... if you are doing 45mph and drop the car into 2nd you would have to blip the throttle much higher. Like you said though, it just depends on the gear and speed you are going.

Well, in any case, comparing the fuel consumption when cruising in gear vs. being in neutral, it doesn't make any sense to me to keep it in neutral. I really don't think you would save anything.

With experience....I noticed that I only began shifting into N once I knew that I would be coming to a stop ahead.
