400+bhp/v8 diesels?

so with the 35d's having over 300bhp and alpina D3/4 having 350bhp and 516lb ft,where are they going next with the performance diesel. Will we see V8's in saloons or will bmw squeeze 400bhp+ from the 6 pot?.Im sure the engine could take it,maybe with the zf8hp90 box?

BMW already have a 3.0 tri turbo engine with 381hp and 740nm which matches most if not all the current V8 diesels.

The likes of Hartge and ACS offer to push that to well over 400hp, I think that as you get into V8 engines the power/mpg ratio starts to get nearer the V8 petrols so diesel losses some of its advantages.

Not so sure BMW will go back to the V8 diesel, in the current climate to downsize. They had a go for a few years with the M67 variants (1998 - 2009).

Makes sense to continue development of the in-line six, IMO. Will fit, and is more suited to the smaller installations.

Garage List
The problem with a big V8 would be the weight. Would work in a 5 series or X5 up but not a 3.

Makes no sense really as the market for them is too small, as the U.S. and China prefer petrol.

And besides a V8 diesel is going to be a very heavy old lump and then you get in to extra engineering costs to manage that, especially if you try to keep the typical BMW weight balance.

And what about the monstrous V10 diesel from Volkswagen?

Engines are getting smaller with more turbos and super chargers and whizzy bits, whether diesel or petrol - EU regulations dictate it.

About the same power as the bmw 3l, but nothing like as smooth, trust me I have both - bmw would do well to stick to the current formula

Porsche Cayenne has a V8 diesel and it's supposedly a monster and likely the Audi unit. Doubt we will see it from BMW tri turbo will creep towards 400hp.

However as BMW seems to (IMO) follow AUDI these days we will await their diesel S and RS models and then probably 340DM models or something will arise?

I would suggest the best way to get better performance from a diesel barge, is to make it lighter, not heavier with a V8.

If they wanted to release a 400bhp diesel, they would have already with the 3 litre six.

A V8 diesel 3 series would be a heavy turd and a step backwards.

+1 M340d would be immense (i.e. the same 3.0 engine with the tri turbo setup @ 370 bhp) with full on M suspension.

I still like the soft 335d suspension in London its terrific.

An M340d would be fantastic. In Italy last summer I saw a 5 series touring with the tri turbo diesel engine and x drive. I was drooling. That thing would be a seriously quick point to point car. Must try and find photos of it.

It would be about the same as my car is now, but they'd still need to sort the xdrive suspension.

Chris Harris did a review of the 550d xdrive and was so excited in advance, expecting an AWD diesel M5... But it just wasn't. Yes, superbly quick and secure point to point (test was done in Germany in winter), but just didn't give the grin factor an Mcar does.

It would be interesting to see what a diesel fettled by M would really be like though... Can it really be done with a diesel???

Just out of interest, BMWs figures show the 550d is virtually no quicker then a standard F3x 335d.

New 5 series to come with quad turbo and well in excess of 400 bhp plus new platform will be much lighter than f10.

Audi are rumoured to be reconsidering the V8 diesel for the new R8 again, inspired by the LMS ass kicker. Now that'll be really interesting.
