Fault code 004ABB -- EGT sensor before particle filter too high

Car has run flawlessly since the alphabet soup-ectomy last week, but I have gotten (and cleared) this EGT code twice, both times on startup with a cold engine. EGTs seem to be in the normal range -- I got 171 C driving/crawling in to work today (EGT before the catalyst). Any thoughts?

So it does not do it once it is warm? That's the stumper.
My first thought was the temp sensors might be reversed, as the DDE is probably looking for a differential.

I would assume you also have the EGR delete.
The engine runs cold for too long and it wants to warm up quicker. The EGR valve also provides for a faster warm up. Since (if) there is not EGR function left, the engine will increase EGT (still thinking it can dump more heat through the EGR valve back inside the engine) in order to speed up the warm up process.
It should only last for a few minutes or roughly 140F.

Are you sure you have connected it to the right connector? It's easy to mix up pre and post cat. The connector should be near the differential pressure sensor not the forward one. Check the color coding on the wires: It should be Yellow/Blue and Brown/Yellow. Not grey/white and brown.

Guys thanks. Looks like I have some spelunking to do.

According to BMWhat (see photo) while coasting down Mass Ave with the traffic this morning, my EGT "before the catalyst" was running 171.84 C (this number moved around) while EGT "upstream of the catalyst" was 168.84 C and EGT "before particulate filter" was a balmy -30.86 C.

Does that suggest a mixup?

No EGR delete... yet.

Second EGT sensor is either unplugged or toast. If unplugged, you should get a second error code for that. Suggest unplugging it and see what happens. I believe you have the alphabet delete done. If so, swap the temp sensors.

I'm with him right now. Says to make sure that you haven't mismatched the connections.

OK that is what Mik said! Excellent. Can you ask if I can swap the plugs or do the EGT probes have to come out?

You do not need to physically remove the temp sensors, just swap the connectors and see what happens. At the very least you will know if one is kaput.
