Car break in...

Someone managed to get in to my car last night and steal my shades and a handful of loose change. The car was locked (I always hold down the lock button to fold in the mirrors) but they still managed to get in without damaging the car at all, here's a link to the CCTV footage on YouTube.

Does anyone have any ideas how the guy managed to gain entry? Alternatively, is it possible to fold the mirrors in from the key fob but not lock the doors?

Looks like your door handle lights came on (44 seconds in to the video) once the guy arrived.

Why didn't the alarm go off?

If the door wasn't locked he took a relatively long time to get in.

Worrying

So, yes it's possible to fold the mirrors without locking the car; if you hold the lock button with a door wide open they'll still fold.

Then door handle lights will come on when the door is opened,

It looks to me like a door was left ajar and he's got in there.... he came straight to it so maybe saw earlier?

I suspect a signal jammer I would get yourself a stop lock, or a pull out barrier on the drive if you can park on a diagonal

I'm worried about this especially knowing my e92 was broken into twice....

I think if this becomes a trend, I will have to get my steering wheel lock from the shed.

have you forwarded the video on to the police ?

At least your car has stayed intact and you can replace your shades.

How would that work if the OP had been parked up for a couple of hours, doesn't a jammer block a signal when the remote is used? I can only think the door may have been left ajar, maybe the OP can enlighten us as to whether he had passenger when the vehicle was last used. Is there still no key hole on the passenger door? I only ask because a few years ago you could do the entry with a a half of a tennis ball, maybe not on the newer cars.

From what I recall you get jammers or/and readers . Coudl have interuppted the signal and you think you locked it and car is not locked or read the code. Scary what they can do.
Only door to have a lock is the driver door others don't all very odd.

He got in really quickly, looks to me like the door(s) wasn't locked otherwise we would of seen the indicator lights flash if he used a remote.

I've coded on acoustic door lock alert and always give the door handles a pull when I lock the car.

I just read an article not long ago on this. They use a signal amplifier. They're basically amplifying the signal from the key fob in the house so that the car thinks it's close.

If I get a chance to find the article I'll post the link.

Does that require the car to have comfort access though?

Usually someone using a jammer would be looking at actually stealing the car.

It's rarely worth the risk just robbing a car parked up, especially at owners premises, as we tend to take out most stuff like laptops etc.

Jammers work best at shopping centre car parks, cinema car parks etc.

There is a reported but unproven issue where those with comfort access may be vulnerable to signal boosting. Again no reports of this being used and would come with some element of risk for those trying to take them.

anyone going equipped would need something to detect signal and to boost it.

I think we ( West Midlands)have had more new BMW stolen by burglary, car jacking, mugging than any other method - with car jacking becoming more active.

Sorry to see the scumbag getting away with your stuff however glad the whole car didn't go.

On another issue... I'd be worried parking my car like that. With the bonnet stuck so far out onto the pavement, your asking for someone to be pissed off and either; damage it or do a running slide over the top to impress their mates.

Looks like a opportunist to me , if he had anything hi tech to get it in I'm sure he would of come to take the car not just some loose change and shades.

Looked through the CCTV fully last night - looks like I pressed the lock button on the key before the drivers door was shut I.e the car was unlocked

A similar thing happened to my E90 on two separate occasions. I came down in the morning to find the passenger door ajar (they don't close it properly in case they wake people) and the contents of the glovebox emptied. Nothing was taken (not even the £2 in change I left in the ashtray) as I don't leave anything of value in there.

To this day I'm not sure if I left the doors unlocked or if they gained access by other methods. I live in a very quiet cul-de-sac that nobody has any business being in unless they live there or are up to no good.

I'd consider that as a lesson to check in the future. At least the car's still there and it's not a burglary in the form of entering your house to get the keys... IMO they so much worse and are psychologically scarring.

Anyhow, sunglasses and small car park change easily replaced
