Wax v. Zaino

I know this topic has been discussed before, but I cannot find anybody in town who uses Zainio products. Is it ok to use Carnuba wax?

Probably better off in the detailing section. But NO. Carnuba and Zaino don't go together. Thats why the first step to switching to Zaino is using Dawn wash. it takes off all the old carnuba that was on your paint so you can put a fresh coat of sealant (Zaino) on it.

Once you go Zaino, your pretty much stuck.

Like you said, it's been discussed before.
Are you looking for someone in-town who sells Zaino? I believe you can only purchase direct in the U.S.

Actually you can use carnauba over top of the Zaino. I typically put on 3 coats of Zaino, and top it with a layer of P21S to add some depth. The carnauba will only last a few weeks and will be gone by by the time you get around to redoing the Zaino. You can't put Zaino overtop a fresh coat of carnauba though, it wont bond to the paint.

I was wondering which one I should use. Is Carnuba as good as Zaino?

Zaino can be ordered from the Zaino Store. They can answer your questions about the product.

As for which is better. They're different products.
Zaino is a sealant. It's synthetic, and will last longer then wax; but it won't give the depth of the wax. A sealant (especially Zaino) gives more of a glass like finish.
A good coat of wax will last a few weeks. Zaino should last 6-10 months.

Stupid question: how do you guys go about waxing your cars? Do you just apply it by hand to all the panels and just clean it off with...I guess soap or something? I really, really need to wax my car. I've had it for 4 months and that nice smooth feeling is going away.

Also, is it better to clay the car before I wax it? Thx.

Well, if were talking about Zaino, use Dawn to wash your car to get all the carnubas off because Zaino is a sealant and it wont adhere to carnubas. After you wash your car, clay it to get all the contaminants off. Then you apply whatever you want (i.e. Z5) with a applicator. Let it sit for 10..15mins and then wipe it off with a clean microfiber.

My opinion is that after using Zaino for a few years now it isn't the end all be all.
I used it on my M5 religiously. In fact I put three layers on the car (which took me 6 hours) then had a bird crap on the car. The crap ate right through the sealant and stained my hood in multiple places. That being said, the BMW paint as we all know is crap.
I think with the 335i I will use wax simply because it is so much easier to apply and take off and offers good enough coverage.

I agree with JoeClothing. I've been a Zaino guy since I got the car, but for the past month or so, I've waxed with Poorboys Natty's Blue paste wax instead. Just trying something different. IMO, there is a little difference in look, and at least for now, I like the look of the wax better. Maybe I'm seeing things or maybe it's just liking to switch it up a little, but it seems to me to catch the light even more than Zaino.

Come spring, I plan to polish and probably will seal with Zaino again, but it's been fun to try something different. I have a black car, and I'm told Natty's Blue is a good wax for dark colors. I believe it -- it looks very good to me. I plan to try some other LSPs, too. I'm finding it fun to experiment a bit.

Zaino: great shine but doesn't last long, WAY too complicated, and doen't repel water well

Wax: I recommend Dupont Premium Teflon Spary Wax. Great shine and repels water like teflon.

A spray wax? Does that last long?
I assume it doesn't take as long to apply, though...

Zaino is a great product. After the initial application, subsequent applications take 30 min. Maintain it with their detailing spray (z-6 or Z-8) and the shine is unbelievable. But like others said, its a reflective shine. For a silver or metallic paint, its makes it very reflective. If you have a black or dark colored car, it doesn't give you depth. For the spring I am switching back to a carnauba. I have a black car and miss the look of dark rich look which is absent with Zaino.
I am going to be using Griots clay, Menzerna FP and finish it with P21S.

I'm a Zaino fan myself - if you can find a copy, Guru Reports did a rather exhaustive test of various products a few years ago, and Zaino came out quite well, especially on durability.

Having said that, your detailing results are about 90% process and 10% product. Read the stickies on detailing here or check out forums like Autopia or Detail City, find a product that meets your price and how much labor I'm willing to spend points, and go for it.

Mostly true but it depends on the carnuba wax. As a general rule of thumb, carnuba waxes don't last that long. But Meguiar's #16 does.

As for Zaino, there's plenty of sealants around that do the same for less $$$ and less hassle IMO.

Not really too big a fan of Zaino. It's nice, but I've been much more impressed with other waxes and sealants. When I go through the entire multi-step process, other products do a better job of hiding the orange peel of the paint, whereas Zaino actually seems to make it worse.
