Problem with the gear lever

Hey guys I have a question. I have a 6MT F80 and recently I've noticed like once every few days down shifting into second or third gear in sport it feels like the gear shifter is moving something out of the way to get into gear. There is no grinding noise made and the gear always goes into place. When I did the 1200 mile service BMW did not change my MT fluid.

Any idea what to do? I'm going to change the MT fluid soon and see if the problem persists. Any experts please chime in!

Update: Problem is occurring while up shifting sometimes into 3rd and 5th gear too. I have also noticed the gear shifter vibrates more than usual when decelerating from high speeds. It will vibrate vigorously for about 4 seconds and then stop. I'm not sure what's going on, any ideas?

It's not part of the 1200 mile service anymore as it was for the E9X M3s. Give it some time and see if the shifting characteristics change or try depressing the clutch all the way down a bit more.

I've had this issue too, and even within the first 200mi I had a couple shifts that felt like lockouts when trying to downshift into 2nd and 3rd. I called my service tech locally and he said within the first 2000mi or so you can expect to get some quirkiness from the MT's from time to time but it's nothing to be worried about unless it's consistent. I really took that as he was saying user error and if I wanted I could bring it down and he'd look at it and hook it up to diagnostics if I needed a 100% for sure answer. If it's worth anything, the tech I was speaking to owns a 15' M3 and has been pretty straight forward with me on my previous car as well.

I will say that my 1200mi service is coming up this weekend or next and they will be doing my MT fluid and it's a little concerning that it's a 50/50 split with dealerships doing it and not doing it. You'd think by now they'd all be able to agree whether it needs to be done or not.

BMW says that the 6MT fluid is no longer changed at the 1,200 service. Why should there be any question by the dealer?

No idea, soon as I have my 1200mi service done and it's on the books I will update the forum on whether or not it was performed. I'm not worried whether it gets done or not to be honest, car feels great to me and haven't had any red flag issues thankfully.

BMW USA says there is no more 1200 mile service. In the manual it clearly states that the 6MT gets a MT fluid change at 1200 mile service. Lazy American dealers "feel" it is not necessary..

I will be changing it even if its at my own expense, because I respect my car.

It was not BMW NA that made the change, it was BMW AG

Has nothing to do with "lazy dealers". BMW said it was not necessary. No problem changing it on your own.

I will wait until 15-20K miles. 1200 miles is too soon. I see no benefit.

I have about 13k on the clock so I think I'm going to change it Friday.

Now the real question is do I do a drain and refill with 2 or 3 quarts of trans fluid. OR, do a full trans flush and refill with 8 or 9 quarts?
