I was just swapping out the rear license plate, and the screws that hold the tag itself had busted through the plastic frame and gouged the paint at some point. I'm left with two spots...one is bare metal, the other is bare metal with a little rust on it. Obviously, there's no cosmetic issue since these spots will always be under the plates. However, I do want to take care of the rust and seal of that bare metal so it doesn't get any worse.

Any suggestions on what process to follow? What specific products to use?

I know I'll need the mask off the spots so I don't mess up the area around them, but what next?

Search for "paint chip touch-up" on YouTube and watch the video by ammo NYC, I belive his teqnique for sanding would be the best approach, and once you do that just follow up with touch up paint so that no rust can come on to the surface. Also with things like this a picture is really worth a thousand words so that we can see the severity of the rust, but it sounds to be just surface rust. Good Luck

Thanks for the video tip. I found it, but haven't had a chance yet to watch it. It's definitely surface rust. It's the result of someone turning and pushing a flat end screw into the paint, so it's like a perfect circle of exposed metal. If by some odd reason it turns out to be more than surface, I'll probably get someone professional to fix it.
