Insurance Renewal. Thieving Bas**rds

God I HATE insurers.
Last year's premium (rounding) £359
Renewal letter £460. No claims / losses / convictions in-between. Hastings multi car policy.
Called them and calmly asked why the £100 hike and pointed out that another year older and wiser I was even less of a risk than last year.
I abhor the "Computer Says So" mentality. Well, it's all down to the underwriters, apparently. There "could" for example have been a sharp increase in crime in my area leading to a high number of claims. I asked whether it was possible that there might have been several alien abductions of black estate cars, and offered a simpler explanation that perhaps they were just c&nts and making it up as they go along.
After requesting to cancel my policies he asked me to hold on whilst he spoke to his manager (here we go - good cop bad cop). Miraculously, they were able to shave the renewal down to £335. In other words, (as I pointed out to him) they were trying to fleece me by a shade over 37% over the actual price. Just for the hell of it. Because they can. Because insurance are THE only industry that can make it up as they go along and hide behind an invisible underwriter whose calculations are top secret. What a load of bullshit. That insurance is compulsory makes it especially odious that there is no accountability (other than to their shareholders) or regulation to prevent this blatant and hypocritical daylight robbery.
Absolute scum.

Got to say, I would be jumping for joy at that premium. But you are right, thieving, crooked, corrupt industry.

I always run another comparison quote at renewal. Almost always my current insurer are cheaper via the comparison quote that via renewal. Nothing a inquisitive phone call won't fix though.

I reckon more and more insurers will remove themselves from comparison sites for this very reason.

I took out a new policy online with the same insurance company (LV) which was much cheaper than the renewal they offered.

As above. Run the comparison sites. Do it every year and always bring the premium down -sometimes the same company

But you are right they are rob dogs. Bear in mind that a year safer also your car is a year older and so they will pay less for it.

Did a classic car valuation and got an increased valuation for my car -result premium increased as the car is worth more. Doesn't work in reverse !!!

Don't help with all the uninsured oxygen thieves we have to pay for !!!

I did the same as the OP. Got my Premium reduced by £100 for the BMW with the threat of cancelling and then got a further £100 reduction for the R. Initially they wanted to charge me £300 more for the R. I threatened them twice with cancelling and got a reduction twice. Bloody thieves.

Couldn't agree more 73henny.
I too run a quote on a comparison site them phone my insurance company and see if they will match my best price assuming like for like. I too hate that they send I n the renewal price which is always inflated to see what they will get away with.

Man what I'd give to pay £460!

I'm currently paying £600 for 2 cars fully comp (no claims protected + euro cover), based in zone 2 in London which in fairness seems pretty reasonable to me.

You should try 1st Central, they're the first insurance company i've ever had that's given me a cheaper renewal price than any quote on comparison sites! I was in shock!

It is more than last year but that's because i had a fault claim last year.

I've recently paid £426 with Admiral, with 0 years NCD.
I do have 14 years ncd, but that is attached to my other car, and apparently you can't use the same no claims discount on 2 separate policies. Why not? Another insurance rip off.
Although I'm not unhappy with my premium.

Another recommendation opportunity to call A-Plan. Ask for Claire Ironside on 01635 874646, mention the forum and they should cut out the BS. They are brokers and will, as experienced by many forum users here, get you a good price coupled with a strong insurance policy (this being the most important bit, not the price)

I don't understand why NCD makes a difference if it protected, as it doesn't mean you haven't made any claims!

Its just the insurance merry go round, same for other renewals such as sky, virgin etc...those who look around and as long as there is competition I am beginning to accept you have to fight to get a better price.

Yes they are thieves but if it means cheaper premiums for those who take action and higher for those with inertia then its fair game for me. Same goes for car purchasing, the enlightened get a discount and those who pay full whack allow us to get cheaper prices. I used to be one of those who paid full price.. no more

I've been back and forward with Aviva, Direct Line, more than and now elephant.

Renewal from more than was 600 (After costing 450 to begin with) so got a price of 400 with Elephant with better cover.

Same thing coming up with House insurance

We can only drive one at a time. But you could have a named driver, and you'll have two cars that could be stolen. Doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to use your NCD on more than one car though.
Having said that I had two cars at one point last year and my insurer simply matched my NCD for my second car. Pretty sure it was esure who I'm still with.

I have found for some reason the insurance for a brand new car is cheaper. When my 335d was new the insurance was cheaper than my 2 year old E90 330d.

Its after the 1st year they shaft you, so I'd expect yours to go up next year (based on my experience!).

My 2nd year insurance on my 335d is more than last year, regardless of what insurance company I get a quote from.
