The A9 Average Speed cameras - Mathematical genius required.

Well drove up to Lossiemouth (North Scotland / Moray Firth) from Wolverhampton.

Car just ate the miles, NO ECO mode this time.

Wife stole they keys for first half to Annandale Waters service station, then allowed me to drive.

Bloody A9, average speed cameras all along it.

That's not the worst though.

A road so speed is mainly 60, apart from lorries, that's 50mph.
Then there are a smattering of dual carriageways so say 70mph for them.

So some of it you are stuck behind two lorries doing 45mph, you then need to overtake....

Then you get to a dual carriageway section and spot a lorry up ahead, you need to keep your speed up to overtake him, however not mess up your total averages lol.

Fun!

pretty sure the average speed cameras are only on the single carriageway sections

but I wouldn't bet my license on it!

My Road Angel keeps track of your average speed as you travel through average speed sections, which is very handy indeed.

Yea it's funny that. All that man maths while trying to press on.

I do the whole A9 once a week and go about 64 mph on the 60 bits and on the duals speed up to 74ish- never been ticketed etc. But yes when having been stuck behind a lorry you can get up to 80 in bits to make up the difference- it's all educated guesswork

About three times now I have seen white speed vans as well as the average cameras- particularly near Inverness. Amazes me they can be happy with the average cameras and send their vans elsewhere.

Bloody awful and frustrating road to drive on. When the whole road (most of it) is limited to 60 why are there so many Mongols doing 50-55?!

I also ask myself about the cameras....do they work at night? And do they work when very foggy?

Being from Perth I used to go up and down that road loads and once did Perth to Aviemore in a tad over an hour... can't see me doing that ever again!

The most frustrating section is the dual carriageway bit from Dunblane to Perth. It's not the dangerous part but still the communists that run our country insist on average speed cameras because it is still the A9.

I'm sure all the accidents are on the single carriageway section north of Perth mainly caused by tourists but still the communists insists on average cameras on a pretty safe stretch.

There does appear to be some form of lighting beside them (infra red?).

I worked of driving at 58mph, left me enough spare mph for those overtakes you need to safely get past a lorry doing 50mph..

Dual carriageway sections I treated as average speed zones to be on safe side of things, again with a couple mph kept spare 'just in case' lol.

The bloody Sat Nav needs to learn those roads better as well lol.

Some of the routes it chose were a bit ambitious lol.

A95 was as crap as usual, Al bough did let Mr Hyde out at one point

Why don't you just reset the average speed reading on the computer in the car when you see the 1st camera ?

Because the cameras appear to cover 60 and 70 zones.

That was in my first BMW- a 1989 325i- loved it!

I would absolutely love to have a free run at it in the 335d without having to worry about being caught speeding!

Exactly what I said to wife today, albeit with our 330d.

The road is stunning in places when really caning it, it really sweeps and 'zooms' plus the incredible scenery.

I used to regularly drive from Newcastle to Lossiemouth, pre speed camera and the plethora of traffic police and camera vans.

It would likely be impossible to replicate some of the times these days.

Outside the holiday season, early morning not many hgv about.

I think best time was in our Carlton GSI, totally mental

I think we will move back to Scotland in the next year... I cannot wait to enjoy those early morning weekend drives. Thankfully there is still plenty good roads to be enjoyed... Busier than ever but still much quieter than down here!

We are off to Black Isle at weekend and I think Ullapool.

She wants to move back here and have me fly down weekly lol.

If we do eventually move back, it will be Moray Firth area or further North.

I prefer it to those places south of Perth.

I'd go back to the Perth area for sure. It was a great place to be as a kid, but shite as a young adult, but now I'm getting old it seems perfect again!

But apart from the family and friends being there it's central to get everywhere, is on the edge of the highland playgrounds, and lots of lovely well priced houses... Can't wait to swap a 2 bed apartment for 5 beds, a double garage and an acre of garden!

One thing I can say about the trip, for a fully loaded 330d, cases and dog, it is effortless.

When you do unleash Mr Hyde for those non average camera over takes, stick to the left and drop 2 gears, it really does deliver.

Comfortably managed to overtake 2 lorries (driving nose to tail - twats).

Yes I am still thinking of a 335i or a jag etc, however the 330d is stunning, and with xdrive sticks firmly to those highland corners.

With the car fully loaded not much xdrive rolly polly either lol.

Want to see how your car really handles - Go to Scotland.
