All tuning boxes are usless according to this US tuner

This US tuner claims all tuning boxes are pretty poor and that even if they are good at first the ECU will eventually 'learn' that it's being duped and react accordingly, returning the car to stock power levels or worse power levels.

I don't have a piggyback ECU, I have a proper remap.

Sorry Terence. Just realised that you went DMS. It's the Grand Duke of Sussex who has one of those. But so far he does not seem to be going backwards. Or have I also got this one wrong?

No problems. I try not to get too involved in the remap v ECU debates. I paid my money and made my choice in full knowledge of the various pros and cons.
Just Terry btw. Terry is bad enough a name!

A good honest name if you're from East London and born in about 1940!

On the actual topic... Just read through some of that and have to say most of its over my listed technical understanding.
For whatever reason I do believe that remapping done well is better than piggyback ECU. I just prefer the idea that the actual map is altered rather than just tricked in to being turned up. This article if true gives me a possible reason why it's better in a more tangible form.

Interesting claim by the author of the information, however, I am still skeptical. If only I was not too lazy to go dyno my car with the JB4 on and off to see if it was still producing a consistent result after 6 months. Hopefully, some like minded individual with easier access than me will go give it a shot for our (specifically piggyback tuned) sake.

It does seem to fly in the face of the concept of the piggyback tune though. If the tune is working properly the ECU should never know that anything is out of the ordinary, thus no corrections made and the car should operate as predicted by the tune.

Well the author's knowledge probably far surpasses mine, but it definitely gives me pause to question the tune, or at least google for a while to see if I can find an answer for some data.

Never done it differently. 3-4 sessions with tuner checking the AFR gives the best tune IMHO.

Yeah, me too.

I was informed that ACS sells piggy back tuning boxes specifically to avoid this kind of problem, because if you have a remap done on the existing ECU and then subsequently return to the dealer for a service (or possibly any other work), there's every possibility that the remap will be overwritten by the original mapping programme if an update is carried out.

I've had over 80,000 miles with tuning boxes on numerous cars.

Not one has been detected by the cars ECU.

The mans just lost his credibility. Maybe they aren't the best option but a good one will do what it says on the tin
