Is this a valid way to estimate max tire size for the front?

These plastic caps are 11mm.

The wheel turns freely with lock-to-lock steering both ways. 225mm /40-18 Bridgestone Potenza 050 RTF on 18x8 +40mm (OEM style 276 18" wheels). There is even an index finger more space everywhere.

This means I can definitely put 245mm /40-18 tires on 18x8 +40mm? It should fit both to the sides and take the slightly higher diameter.

Or am I not thinking straight? Trying to pull the trigger on some O.Z. and PSS, so this is exciting, and bad if I screw up.

If I wanted 18x8.5 wheels then 40mm is still the offset that puts the middle right where it is now, right?
