Mondeo Vignale, Ford's attempt at matching ze Germans!
Anyone fancy a Ford Mondeo for £31k?
I admire them for trying, but really what's the point? http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/ford/mo...vignale-review |

I'm not so sure on the quality, reliability and holding together front of the Fords. The Ford I had gained dents really easily, the exhaust starting rusting through at 60k, various bits of trim started falling off including the name badge. The bonnet stuck closed, which is a destroy the front grill to get it open again. The AC motor and radiator packed up, and finally the rad fan just stayed on, but only occasionally, leaving the battery flat. |

Would be okay if they offered decent higher spec engines, also sounds like handling has been compromised - soft.
For 31k you do get a lot as standard with ford (usually). |

Have to agree with the poor quality of Ford's. My Mondeo was a disaster. Alloys corroded under the lacquer. Exhaust back box fell off without warning at around 36k miles. Clutch master cylinder failed as did egr and O2 sensors. Loads of faults under warranty and Ford UK response was diabolical. To be fair my dealer was excellent but knew in the end I'd never buy another Ford. For £31k I would rather invest in a second hand prestige car. A Mondeo will only ever be worth Mondeo money in 3 years and my experience is more optional extras is more things to have packed up during ownership.

Owned a number of fords and never had a problem, still have a 2007 Mondeo and most done so far is tyres and brakes discs due this month. I guess it depends on what prestige brand you go for, a number just have prestige repair costs as well. |

Their 180hp diesel with 4WD does 62 in 9.3 seconds and costs 32k, that's far too slow, if they offered 330d performance for little more than 320d money then it might make sense but offering near 116d performance for 325d money doesn't make sense to me.
But what do I know!

I may have got a Friday car as it was problems from early on. I had an earlier Mondeo and loved it. This was a 55 reg car from Ford Direct at 6 months old. Car was mint looking but had so many faults. My previous Mondeo and 2 Fiestas were pretty much trouble free.

Hang on, my £50k 335d was worth about 33 after about 2'000 miles or 1 week!
I love my car but BMW's rarely hold their value anywhere near as well as another premium German brand. Isn't the fact we all have Gap insurance confirmation of this!? |

Yes we must remember the 3 series is more common than the Mondeo. They likely loose a similar % 6 months from new, however for the BMW that's a considerable drop. Also with the very high discounts, this drop is likely to increase. This is where Ford miss having a Granada / Scorpio executive range. A modern day Cosworth Scorpio (just not so crap looking) with more powerful engines than the Mondeo. I just don't like small engines in big cars - route BMW are now heading down. |

Surely your car had over £10k of discount though, so was actually less than £40k?

I doubt very much if anyone will ever pay for list price for this.
I'd imagine the vast majority will go to company car drivers who have little choice over what brand they drive. |

Can't imagine anyone having steering rack problems, rusting hubs, engine problems (328's) ..... To me the mondeos main problem is its size and engine range. It also feels better with variable dampers, comfort setting on anything other than motorway is driving a jelly. |

Isn't the Mondeo in a totally different market place than BMW? Ford may have ideas to push it up market, but perception is different.
It is a big family car, more 5-series sizing, so will have an appeal for big car users who will likely never look at BMW or Audi, for a multitude of reasons. I know there seems to be a gap in the Ford, with the "big car small engine" format, but isn't that what most 3 and 5-series cars are in the real world? If someone wants the Mondeo size car, I do wonder what the real costs would be over 3-years against a similar specced 520d. I do think that is what will be the deciding factor for those who feel buying a badge, or who resist badge snobbery will be looking at. HighlandPete |

I feel BMW introduced the 518d just to bring in Ford Mondeo buyers!
