It won't buff out, that needs to be replaced. Happens on all cars driven in salt belt region that mostly go through automated car wash. Instead you need to wash your car yourself, pop the wheel cap and wash there regularly. Protect it with anti seize paste afterwards.

That is an insane amount of corrosion, I have 200k kms (125k mi) and no where near that amount. I would try and remove the axle nuts first, clean up the threads and hub with a wire brush and try a new nut. Trying to replace the entire axle, removing the hub + bearing is no small job. If you are lucky enough to get away with the above mentioned advice I would make sure you coat everything with some anti rust spray (fluid film is my best friend and spray it on everything). Damn our salty roads!

exactly my point! he need to replace that nut asap. the half shaft spindle is made out of stronger material so little heat from a torch will take care of the rust. but the nut need to go...

So after cleaning one the worst one up a lot more you can see the nut is cracking most likely completely rusted on, pushing a screwdriver into makes it flake off some more layers to
My mechanic is saying it's not a life threatening situation to drive on it when you drop the nut (lol) the wheel will stop driving the wheel forward and you will get pulling to one side , like a flat tire. It will eventually rust off and you will have to replace all the axels (xdrive) My car has a warranty till may 2015 but I'm 8000 over the 100k You guys think Bmw will good will this situation. It's obviously a defect in materials no? Or eles my other option is to get it from a salvage yard like car-parts com |
