It's fairly common that the wires in the shifter mechanism get stressed and break over time. See this post for a video on how to repair it: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=842645

Had to this happen on my old 335xi. Its not too bad of a fix. You'll see the wires right away that are damaged.

If you're still under warranty just have the dealership replace it. If not, follow the DIY in the DIY section, it's a SUPER easy repair. Don't pay out of pocket for this repair.

Just did mine last week-end. It is a bad design, scheduled to fail. I am on my 2nd Steptronic (1st on warranty).
Basically you have to extend an harness of 8 wires. Not hard, but not that easy (damn small wires!) Amateur-style I know. |
