increase in engine noise post egr block?
Hi i blocked my egr a month or so ago with a egr block replacement. I have Noticed a slight increase in engine noise when the car starts up and is stationary. Is this normal?

Do you have a cone filter or stock airbox? With my filter you can hear a lot more intake/turbo noise than the stock box, a few seconds after startup there is a change in intake tone and it gets a bit louder. I have not investigated to see why or if it has anything to do with the EGR block though

I've noticed my engine is nosier and sounds like I'm driving a diesel truck. Did anyone find a problem with their install? Now mind you the difference isn't huge but it is noticeable. Read similar things on trucks when they block their egr.
I installed the egr block kit on my car which blocks the egr at both ends. After the install my engine is noticeably more diesely sounding. It's a bit louder at idle and so what rougher running. Not sure if this is normal or just due to cooler weather, but I did notice the same thing when my egr failed. No additional noise or roughness except at idle. Driving sounds the same as before. It does not sound like an exhaust leak, it just sounds like I switched to low centane fuel in cold weather, Last edited by Thecastle; 12-30-2015 at 06:50 AM.. |

EGR generally increases ignition delay, so by eliminating the EGR you are effectively advancing the timing. A lot of other things happen as well, but this advance of timing will be one thing that can cause an increase in noise. The logged data on EGR use when I was running OEM equipment showed the EGR valve was usually fully open in idle situations...

Thanks tdiwyse. That would explain a lot. Interesting on the fully open at idle. Maybe I'm reading torque pro wrong, but my car indicates 0% egr at idle, coast, and full throttle. I only see egr opening at part throttle and only after the engine is above 70c. Is it possible they changed the egr startegy since you logged with newer dde stratigies. Or is my egr behaving differently since it's blocked? I dunno. It is difinitly louder since I blocked it, and my wife notices too. But it gets quieter after it's warmed up
