What's creaking?

In the last week or two my car has developed a creaking sound when negotiating uneven surfaces at low speed. I've read that it could be seals? (The rubber variety). If so, which seals exactly? It sounds like it's coming from the door pillar on the passenger side, but I can't tell which seal or seals it is.

Any thoughts?

Possibly creaking doors, quite common if you use the wrong stuff to wash your car with.... there are lots of thread on it ... eg http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...light=creaking

(you should try using the Search )

I did try and search. But couldn't really decide which seals might be creaking.

It's a bit of a pain to find out which one and when.

We never had any real issue with squeaky seals / doors until last week this week.

I washed the car before holidays and on the way up and especially coming back it squeaked, more so when it was hot and sunny on way back.

When I get round to washing the car will pay attention to the door areas.

73henny, has your car got Shadowline trim? I wax my trim regularly to keep the creaking at bay. The fact the dashboard creaks like an old crate is another story.

It's almost certainly the top seal on the door being pressed against the metal door frame. If your drop your window and it goes away then that will confirm it.

Yeah, I can't figure out which seals are making the noise.

Yes my car has it. Not sure why it'd be creaking though? Are you waxing where the rubber trim meets the doors?

I read that in you thread and tried lowering all the windows. Still creaked unfortunately.

Wax the Shadowline trim where the felt backed rubber at the top of the door sits. Washed my car this evening and then waxed the trim

Did the same to mine tonight too. But decontaminated the felt in case either snow foam or car shampoo was the cause with isopropyl, then used GTechniq panel wipe to wipe down the shadow line trim. I normally use swissvax ptfe wax but tonight I put two coats of GTechniq Evo 2 on the shadow line trim to see if that is a more semi permanent fix as it has very low friction properties.

OP: stood outside of your car, with doors shut, press firmly along the rubber strips at the top of the doors. You should be able to replicate the squeak/ creak to confirm if we're all right.

Yep that's where i have squeaks. If i put tyre gel on that rubber it cures it for a couple of weeks, i'm yet to discover if anything will fix it more long term, i'd love to know if anyone finds out.

Tried C2v3 but it did nothing.

Try posting something on the Canadian bit of the Forum.

They are supposedly pretty good at sorting out seals....

My car creaks like my bones at low speeds and when going over a speed bump I think the car will fall apart.

I've just had it booked in for three days with BMW to resolve.

Apart from the inconvenience, great service so far.

My 1 series (both of them) creaked like mad. After cleaning it stopped but then started again as it dried out. So I guess it makes sense with the warmer weather things start to dry out and creak more.

Never resolved it. It did go in for it and they blamed it on something I had used to clean the car, did't fix it though.

That's why i went for a two door, less doors, less creaking ;-)

Update- followed forum advice: cleaned with fairy liquid, treated rubber with Autoglym rubber gel and polished the inner paint work where the rubber closes on.
Currently no creaking

Door rubbers... I suffer (my car ) from this too... Bad quality rubbers.

Gummi Pflege, Silicone, WD40 etc... Vaseline. KY Jelly

Any of these can help for a little while or forever but nothing lasts forever.

PS: never had this problem in my Opel Insignia. Better rubbers or more massive chassis!!

Further to my previous post, the Gtechniq Evo 2 is, so far, working. Absolute silence since applying. As it is bonded to the shadow line, hopefully it'll last longer than the statutory 2 weeks that all the other waxes/ tyre gels/ lubes etc. provide.

I had the same issue with my 330, dealer sorted it for free saying its a manufacturing fault that they are aware of so the rattle wont go away with gels/waxes etc.
Suggest you let your dealer sort it for you as it drove me crazy.
