Those with electric rear sunshade, is it useful?
So I was debating on tinting my windows a bit darker to keep the good ole Florida sun at bay, and then I came across a video on YouTube of someone who had the electric rear sunshade that I believe only came in the M3's.. So I did a few searches and found one for like $300 that's a complete plug and play unit, and I'm just wondering if those of you who have this, actually use it..?? Does it perform well at keeping the Sun off the rear of the interior..?? I'd hate to chance taking off the old tint and messing up those heater lines on the window (as I've had that happen before) so if any of you with the rear sunshade could chime in, I'd appreciate it!
Thanks!

Useful, thats debatable..I had it on the 330..But as they age/ things start to break. And its not 100% plug n play as the car is not pre-wired for it. So technically you'd have to run the wire from the JBE to the sunshade along with the necessary switch plus I'm pretty sure you'd have to code the car to realize theirs a sunshade installed. Tint would be better IMO, especially in FL heat.

The only time I find it comes in handy are actually at night when some idiot with high beams are on or the morons with the goofy aftermarket lights. It will filter out a good majority of that and still gives relative good rear visibility.

I have my windows tinted and I have all the shades in the rear.
If I want complete privacy in the rear, I pull the shades. At night I can lift the rear shade if some moron has a truck lights at window level.

Our 328xi coupe has a factory installed electric rear sunshade and to be honest, it is a piece of crap, gets stuck going up, stuck going down. When it gets stuck it makes an awful ratcheting noise and continues to try to go up or down depending what position you were trying. I have actually had to stop the car, get in the back seat and push the shade back into position just to get it to stop.
We have had the car since it had 30,000 miles on it (at a 110,000 now) and it has never worked right. Have thought about pulling it apart to see what the issue is, but never felt like crawling around in the back seat and trunk to fix the damn thing.

I have it on my 335i (along with manual for rear doors)...
...and it does come in handy. Had back seat passengers last weekend and the sun was beating on them at one point...then I remembered the shade! I just bought this car last month, so I didn't think of it immediately. They were quite happy about it and one used the shade on her door as well.

Had it in my first 335. I liked it and left it up all the time. When combined with the rear door sunshades, they do a good job of keeping the interior cooler and add some privacy.

My car has dark tint but I still use the sunshades all the time. I wouldn't say it's a must-have feature but it's definitely useful especially if you have light or no tint.

A lot of times on my way home the sun is setting in my rear view and sometimes if I look out the window I'll get that temporary white-spot/blindness thing and just figured it would help alleviate that..

I can see that. Now that I think of it, I've seemed to always have the luxury of my commute facing the sun.
....orrrr maybe it isn't? Who knows lol |

If one has tried driving the shade up and down with items on the shelf or pulling it out by hand the mechanics is damaged.

I have one and I typically use it when I park somewhere in the sun. I think it helps with keeping the heat out. Though I still want to get tint.

I get this option on every new BMW I can and it is nice about 5 days a year.

+1, although I do use it when I park on a sunny day, keeps the temp of the car down. And I have tints as well. Don't think it's worth the effort of a retrofit though

Has its good and bad points. The good; it can make a difference in keeping the car cool in the summer. The bad; it's pretty much guaranteed to be a PITA and break at some point. Case in point, mine has been stuck up for 6 weeks.
