Flux capacitor
or shifts your AC unit from blowing hot air to cold air. But that's according to that lying publication called the owners manual. Lol

Your wife's mood, car lets you know before you get home. So if it's in the red, make sure to pick up some flowers on the way home!

I've wondered the same thing, specifically the relationship between that control and climate control. I typically just turn it cold when I turn my climate control down, and vice versa.

It's OK. You can consult the holy book of armaments. But if you still have owners manual phobia, if you want cold air, turn to blue. Heat turn to red. Not much more to it.

I read it but it wasn't clear to me. So in addition to dual climate control knobs, this effects air temp in the cabin?

It affects how much cold or hot is blown when air is on. Temp dials just work the fan mostly once you hit your temp. If it's in the middle it will take forever to heat up or cool down. Why BMW didn't make this automatic I'll never guess.

From what I have read it affects the temp of air coming from the vents next to it..so you could have warm air from the side and bottom and cool air from the vents in your face.

Pretty much this. You can have the heat on at 80 but if you're to hot turn that to blue and cool air will come from the "middle" vents only (not the bottom or top)

In the States, it signals to drivers around you whether you're a Republican or a Democrat. I see you're on the fence...

BMW has always had the ability for the driver to regulate air temperature to the face, independent of air temperature to the cabin overall. IIRC, in the 2002 (model name, not the year) the air to the face was largely outside temp, so in winter this could be frightfully chilly. But later, BMW made the vents to the face controllable in mix of fresh outside air vs. heat air...therefore the current knob that OP asked about.

The manual says it regulates the cool air in the upper vents

"Knurled wheel for more or less cool air from the vents for the upper body area"

fancy!

It's part of the BMW app. Be careful about which direction you swipe. You might end up with a surprise.
