Salt...

So, I commute through Maryland and this past winter I commented to friends at work that it looks like Maryland is trying to convert the roads to salt they use so much when 2 flakes start flying.

Leap forward to my annual Spring/Summer maintenance and I pull the air box out to change the filter. When I opened it up there were actual salt deposits on the inside walls of the air box. Took 30 minutes to clean all the salt out.

Yep, winter time really does a number on cars in general. Now imagine all the people who wouldn't even think about cleaning salt out from the engine bays, and undercarriage/suspension. Road salt kills components.

My car developed a squeak after the last snow storm and subsequent overkill of calcium carbonate and rock salt. It took me till now to figure out what has rusted.... something in the parking/emergency brake inside the driver side rear rotor. Guess I'll tear it apart this weekend and clean it out also.

That's what was done years ago. Sand and cinders.... and if you didn't have snow tires and/or chains you kept your wimpy arse home.

But no, someone thinks making a salty slushy fragging mess makes driving in it so much easier..... fracking DoT morons.

I live in maryland so I understand your pain. People in the jeep community use a product called fluid film. You spray it on your underbody twice a year. It has great results!

I live in Florida so the only salt I get is at the beach

I would LOVE to live up north where it gets below 50 degrees in the winter time.

Whats the best way of washing salt off? I just sprayed down my engine bay last week but I'm not sure of that made a difference.

Some people say some citrus based soap works.

Too much salt gives you high blood pressure and reduces the life of your car.

I live in Canada. Its the end of May, and there's more salt on my street's roadside than there is in the whole of the Atlantic Ocean...
