bmw from hell!
I would just like to have a rant about my e92.
So I have had my car for 2 years now, done 60k, n53, 2009 and it has just been an endless money pit, has anyone had as much bad luck as me. First week of owning it someone stole my shark fin £50 plus paint. But still not fixed, I have a massive dip in my roof where the thieves struggled to get it off. 2 months new rad £450. 4 months new shocks £400 5 months new gearbox oil cooler £180 10 months new gearbox sump £480 16 months new oil level sensor £200. Still temperamental. 17 months new brakes Inc calipers due to wharping £400 17 months rear ended. Insurance job through bmw, boot lock is temperamental. 22 months water pump, battery, thermostat and diagnostic £1800 23 months car is hard to start and when it does it runs bad and goes into limp mode. Problem is unknown and car has been off the road for 3 weeks already. Plus God knows how much in diagnostics. Do I just get shot of this head ach car? Most of those items on the list are normal wear and tear - well I have certainly had 5 of them. I don't think the car costs nearly as much as it did to run my Audi. You better have deep pockets for that one. I have claimed more than £8000 of warranty work on mine to date but I won't part with it just yet because when it works and there are no faults it is an absolute joy. I think... I could get rid of it but a) I have maintained it to my standards, over and above the service book... and b) what if I get another car and have to go through all of this again? I have gone for months at time of happy motoring but then I have had bad years with a problem a month or every other month. It varies... from £200 on a sensor a month to no cost bar MOT/Service another year...
The only reason I'd say get rid of yours is if you have the hard start looked into and no one can solve it. The Audi had a hard start/limp mode and there was the money pit... back and forth to the dealer... out of pocket expenses seeing independent mechanics and trying to solve it myself... replaced a starter... an alternator... a crank position sensor... and it just got worse and worse... even the best of my grease monkeys could not find the fault... that was the final straw for me. Months and months of hard starts and very embarrassing.. one at Hampton Court Palace... with people looking at me funny... and the worse one? Outside the Dorchester in Mayfair. |

It is very tempting to get rid of it but like broken_gearbox says I could get another 2nd hand car and the problems start all over again.
I guess it's a good thing in a way what has and hasn't been done to my car and what shouldnt go wrong as I have a bunch of new parts on it. I have taken out warranty now for the next 2 years. The only problem is I have to pay for diagnostics and at bmws rate of 175 an hour and this problem a bit complex for your avarage garage it may cost me fortunes as it could take bmw a couple of days and then the bill is massive. |

Like you I have had countless issues with my E53 4.8is, but I have put so much time, effort and money into it that I would never see the return and I'd just be handing over a fully sorted motor to someone else to enjoy. You have payed out quite a bit so the hope would be that most of the big stuff is now sorted.

Personally, I'd say get rid of it. When you find yourself disliking a car because it's temperamental, then it's almost impossible to start trusting it again, even if the faults are fixed, you're just waiting for the next thing to go wrong.
You either have to basically rip it apart and fix everything that might possibly break, or hit the reset button and buy another car, which could of course be even worse, but somehow issues are easier to take on a different car sometimes! A lot of the items you mention though, are what I'd consider to be consumables, shocks and discs and even Rads do need changing and when it comes to BMW's waterpumps are always a weak point. E36's and other BmW's of the same era had a terrible reputation for eating those, as the impeller was made from plastic, that appeared to have all of the mechanical properties of a chocolate bar that's been left in the sun. Even though it should have been sorted now, I'm always wary of BMW cooling systems after too long sorting them out on ones I owned years ago! |

half of those sound like you have just been taken to the cleaners.
1800quid for what must be 150£ worth of parts is a complete joke. this is why you should learn basic mechanics yourself. |

For me gut feel says keep it, assuming that A1 can fix that last issue you mentioned. I have had so many poor experiences with the dealer that I would stay well clear in future.

I was advised to change the calipers in case it was related which I didn't mind as I just upgraded to 335 calipers. |
