Windows going up and down when open door?

Is this a normal process? I have never experienced this in my previous bmw cars. Every time I stop the car to get out, when I open the door, I hear the Windows automatically go down and then back up. It only moves about an inch but still its slightly annoying. Is this some type of built in feature to prevent someone from leaving the windows down? Any way to disable it? Thanks for the insight.

The coupes have frameless windows so they slide up and down upon opening to create a seamless closure to reduce wind noise etc

it's supposed to do that, because the car has frameless windows. I don't think it can be disabled.

Yep, normal. Did this on my Z as well. All frame-less windows/doors do this on BMW's. I think it's a good feature IMO.

Trust me you do NOT want to disable that feature.
I had a failure with my 1er cabrio a few years ago where the drivers window failed to drop when the door opened. When that happens it will not close properly because the top of the window will hit the rubber seal on the door.

It lets the door close easily by dropping the window to create an air gap. If it didn't, you would need to slam the door closed to overcome the short air pressure "pop" that would occur on a tightly sealed door.

No, that is not what the function is for.

As it's been said, on BMWs with frameless windows, the window seals into a channel on the molding. If you've ever had your windows frozen closed in the winter, you'd know that if the window doesn't drop down, and you shut the door, the window slams into the outside of the molding, and does not seat in the channel.

Myself and many others have spent plenty of winter mornings driving around with the window bowed out, not sealed within the door frame due to not being able to drop down and rise up into the channel.

Ah, no. If the windows didn't drop slightly during opening and closing, you'd have a very difficult time opening and closing the door - the glass is pressed into the seal groove.

It's not only BMWs. My 2005 Mustang frameless windows also lowered a half inch or so when opening the door, and my 2003 Mini does it as well. I think it's quite common.

Unfortunately I'm not that knowledgeable on BMW's, but on my 370Z which functioned the same as my M235, you typically had to reset the window after disconnecting the battery so the window would work correctly. This involved rolling the window down all the way and holding the button down for a few seconds, then rolling all the way up. After that it worked. I imagine BMW is similar.

Good information. I was also told what Zooks527 said. I was told that because BMW's are built so air tight they needed to make the windows drop slightly to relieve the pressure inside the cabin. I ignorantly thought that was cool, but now I know otherwise.
