Misfire this morning

Howdy,
Drove a 1/4 mile away from my house this morning and got stuck in traffic. Car started to misfire pretty badly but no fault code got stored, except for some EWS-Tamper fault code

Any ideas? 65k miles, no cbu clean up yet

There aint no misfiring with diesel engines. DPF regeneration can make popping noise.

Definitely an odd one. As indicated any missing/misfiring would be a fueling issue (no spark). When's the last time your fuel filter was changed? (just a shot in the dark). I believe the recommended interval is 3 oil changes which works out to be about 40K miles.

I often experienced the misfiring behavior (i.e. rough idle, engine hesitation) when I had trouble with the "injector zero mass/quantity adaptation".

After 16 injectors replacement in 2 years, it was fixed in Nov. 2014 with new DDE software. The rough idle occasionally still show up but clear itself. They must have tuned the algorithm that set the injector "zero quantity" adaptation.

That sounds right. I'll see if it happens again

Doesn't this usually turn on the SES? I know at the beginning they were replacing injectors for this fault (which is usually triggered by CBU). But now they just update the DDE and re calibrate the adaptation values.

Used to turn ON the SES light but not anymore with the new DDE software. Sometime, I will get temporary zero adaptation shadow codes (or pending codes), no permanent fault code to illuminate the SES light.

So it sounds like while BMW has not been able to do anything about CBU, they have changed the programming to make it more tolerant of CBU before setting the SES. This will not eliminate the need for carbon cleaning, but will extend the intervals before it's needed, as long as you are willing to accept the reduction in MPG.

I'm CPO.. so I don't have much of a choice but to wait. Almost at 70k miles

This seems in line with my car. I did the first "preemptive" cleaning at 100k. My mpg's weren't the worst- I could still get 32 mpg on the highway. Maybe a slightly rough idle- nothing telltale. When they did the cleaning, they said it was quite bad.

Is it a bandwagon yet? Count me in. 60K with CPO, never been cleaned, waiting for the SES.

If the updated programming makes the car highly tolerant of major CBU that would be some serious BS right there.

With a CBU free engine and "perfect" conditions I can get 42 mpg.

I got that when I first bought the car and really really tried hard (no a/c coasting down hills, barely acc. up hills).

Im having the same problem...65k miles, misfiring, bad idle, terrible gas mileage, and reduced power. Went to dealership, they wanted to replace injectors. I hinted at CBU cleaning, but they weren't having that. I wasn't about to drop that kind of cash on injectors when carbon build up is a problem.

Im gonna attempt to clean it myself...we will see how it goes. Using this as a guide:

I just noticed my car threw a shadow fault for glow plug #5.. maybe that's what the misfire was? I'll see if it sets a light in the next few days
