Is this normal?

The headlight knob stays illuminated after I leave the car...

Also, the little fan icon in the center console stays on as well...

It all turns off after a couple off minutes when the car finally shuts itself down. Just stay with the car until it shuts down you'll hear it's final click while waiting outside of the car.

Ah, okay. They turned off.

Thought it had something to do w/ my key being in the vicinity.

Is it okay to just leave the key in the car overnight? It's garaged of course.

It doesn't hurt anything to leave the key in the car. Except if a burglar gets into your garage.

Is this pic of a M235i?? Curious since it has the mpg gauge under the tachometer. Thought that was for 228is only.

The MPG gauge is there if you don't have the tech package which adds the extended cluster display.

Looking in older pictures, yeah looks like it must have become standard only on the 2015s, or if you had a 228i with tech package. Not sure if it's standard for 2015 on the 228 or just the M235. BMWUSA.com shows it in both for the configurator but could be wrong.

The fan on the HVAC is on because you seem to have an active ventilation timer set.

I'd advise against it. When the key comes into the vicinity of or unlocks the car, the car wakes up. If the key never leaves the car, the car never truly ever goes to sleep.

Woah I didn't even notice that the non-tech packages 228i's didn't have the MPG needle. That's the first time I've seen any BMW not have one (besides M cars).

Stopped by the dealer to check out a 228 m-sport(non-tech) and it does have the mpg gauge. I looked at a M235(non-tech)and it did NOT have the mpg gauge.

Go figure, weird.

Not sure about locking w/ the key fob, but if I lock the car by touching the door handle all the lights/fans etc turn off right away. As for leaving the fob in the car, its not a good idea, security aside, since they 'talk' to eachother which drains batteries.

That isn't true. The keyfob has a radio (for when you press a button) and a passive RF tag. Passive RF tags are energized by the antennas around the car, but those antennas are only activated when you go to either hit the lock zone or pull the door handle (comfort access).

Regardless of the key being in the car, there are still computer systems buzzing about silently (ever wonder how the BMW Remote app works? The modem in the car is constantly listening for data input, just at a very slow pace) - which over time will drain the battery. I expect included in that code is a line which detects when the battery is critically low and turns off that functionality.

Either way I've gone on long 2 week vacations and business trips and never had an issue with a flat battery even in winter.

Agreed. I've had my car three years, always leave the key in my car, and the battery has NEVER drained, even after several weeks. So security issues aside, I can confidently say that leaving the key in the car has no ill effects on the battery.

At which time, the MPG gauge is replaced with one of two versions of an electronic MPG gauge, depending on what mode you're in.

Seriously, for the $ for the tech package, they could have put a few choices for useful gauges there instead of more insipid MPG nonsense.
