Carplay

Has anyone actually tried apple's carplay feature on their car?

I don't think BMW is on board with this.

My '14 has the Siri Eye feature--you hold down the voice command button for about 3 seconds, and Siri answers over Bluetooth. No CarPlay.

No Apple Play or Android Car in BMWs...and maybe not ever. I'm fine with that. I like my Android and iOS on phones and tablets. I'm perfectly happy with the iDrive interface. I just wish they'd offer more incremental updates for EVERYONE.

I think BMW signed up to partner with Apple i-whatever-its-called in an announcement by Apple a long time back. No news on this front yet. Actually, in general, Apple/Android in vehicles is taking a long time in coming, so I won't be surprised if BMW holds out for a while to see which side to take/how it can best integrate into iDrive.

I've always had trouble with a weird and confusing delay between the tone from the car, Siri engaging Bluetooth, and then actually being ready for a command.

You can also use the "Hey Siri" function if the phone is plugged in which is a much better shortcut for me. iOS9 will also make this way more relevant.

The CarPlay and Android Auto is going to be more along the lines of the iOS and android desktops on the iDrive screen...or some variation of that. It has it's good points and bad points. I'm just not sure if BMW would want their cars to have the same interface as a Corolla. It erodes brand distinction.

They can have their own as well as additional support for Android Auto/ CarPlay, no need to replace iDrive.

But as this is BMW, this will never happen, because:

- Connected Drive Services = $$$
- BMW Internet = $$$
- BMW Apps = $$$
- BMW Maps = $$$
- RTTI = $$$
...

You get the point...

With Android Auto it is possible to basically get that for "free" and BMW gets no easy money.

I have the opposite problem--I have a hard time getting the Hey Siri thing to work in the car. Plus I rarely have the phone charging in the car.

That's pretty amazing, because Siri didn't debut until the iPhone 4S, which came out in 2011.

I think what he means is that Siri works in his E90. It does in mine as well. You just hold down the Siri button (on the iPhone) and it works through Bluetooth.

Or any Bluetooth speaker, headset, or earbuds.

I keep my phone on a magnetic vent clip style mount and rerouted the iDrive charge/sync cable to the little glovebox next to the steering wheel. I secured a flat cable inside the roof of the box, so if I want to charge/sync, I just pull the cable out of the drawer and can close the door on it.

Exactly. They will only do this if market forces them to or if they can figure out a way to charge for the compatibility. Why would they want to give up profits and sacrifice one of the things that differentiates them from competitors?

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

For now, I long press the Voice Button and it brings up Google now search through the car audio and I can dial, text, ask for the weather, etc., etc. Works well and much quicker than the I-Drive call function.

PS: I'm using a Samsung Galaxy Note 4

True... I bet they are throwing their logo out there just so they are not left out, with pretty much everybody else on board.

The logo is that of "BMW Group", It's unusual for them to use that logo and not BMW and Mini separately... My guess is only Mini will have Car Play... Maybe Rolls-Royce if there is a backseat screen for entertainment.

I think BMW has invested too much in iDrive to just let people switch it out.

Yeah this could mean they are looking to add it to a model. It could be a model that has a limited market in a specific region. It could even be a BMW motorcycle, lol. I've never been in a Rolls...what are their Nav/Entertainment systems like?

Not sure if you've seen some of the build requests they get (and actually manufacture), but at that price range, I'm sure you could pretty much ask for anything you wanted...
