Did you hate the 1200 miles break in?

Picking up the M3 tomorrow and wanted to see opinions of what everyone went through the first 1200 miles.

Did you really keep revs under 5k?

I'll be driving from LA back to SF area along the 1 and 101. I know there will be times where i'll be tempted to go WOT.

How was your first ~1200 miles before service?

Break-in period? Drive it hard right out of the box man. Have no fear. The engine has already been run and tested.

I've never had an issue w/ the last 4 cars/motorcycles I've owned brand new. Drove/rode them hard, redlined them all day and spanked them like I stole them. Two things I always did though was warm up the car for at LEAST 10 mins or at least drive it around for 10 mins first before getting on it and changing the oil EVERY 4k-5k miles no matter how fantastic the synthetic oil that was going into it.

No.

Not unless you are convinced BMW engineers were exercising their German sense of humor when they specified drive-train brake-in instructions in the manual.

Go google "german sense of humor" ...

Honestly, if there was a genuine concern about obeying proper break-in procedure, why wouldnt BMW physically restrict the RPMs via the ECU until the 1200 mi service??

I still baby my cars during break-in, but I 100% agree on the gentle warm-up process. Pretty much all of the wear on an engine occurs before the metal's had a chance to expand and the oil has had a chance to reach operating temperature and viscosity. Be very kind to your engine while it's warming up.

I have been trying to exercise restraint during break in and it has been difficult.

I try to keep my highest shifts at 5K. I may have gone over six once..or twice. Not really keeping count.

I have kept it under 100 if that helps.

I do fully warm up the engine before engaging in any shenanigans.

Not at all.

I did it driving wonderful European roads while on vacation with my wife and two kids. I have such fond memories of that period

Amazing how people will believe something like this over all the automotive engineers. Wow! I know there are always crazy ideas like this but I'm shocked at how many believe this nonesense.

The night I got my car (we ordered it), we stopped back by the dealership later in the night to pick our other car up after dinner. I let my girlfriend drive the M3 home, and I drove our other car.

The first thing she did was pull out of the dealership and redline the first 3 gears down the street with 10 miles on the odometer.

I asked her about it when we got home and she said, "I thought you would like hearing the exhaust (M performance)....." The next thing she said was,"This car is fast!"

Let her warm up, then drive it like it was meant to be driven!

I plan on taking mine to the Nurburgring right after delivery...
