114 degree forecast - Let's Take the M4 to the Track!

Our club ran an early morning "test and tune" DE event at our local WHP East Track. Four 20 minute sessions, with 40 minute break between sessions. Start at 6:00am and done by 9:20am for the advanced group.

This is the first time back to the track with the M4 since my dealership replaced the right front strut and EDC sensor due to the recurrent "Chassis Malfunction" which was happening and my previous few track days. I'm happy to report that the car performed (near) flawlessly and had no codes thrown at all. Never had to go to my backup plan of disconnecting the EDC cables. The suspension performed great, and I really liked my latest alignment setting that I was using. This car is SO much fun, and so forgiving and amiable to being tossed around. Feel like I've kind of "re-fallen" in love with my M4 which is so nice in light of my recent problems with her.

Only issue was soft brake pedal 10-12 minutes into each session. High heat, almost gone Carbotechs, and SRF in need of change probably the main culprits. Blew a turn just before the pit turn-off and went straight into the pits, acted like I meant to do that and casually went back on track on the other side. Anyway, it was good exercise in managing brakes during the later part of the sessions, having to brake slightly earlier. Update: inspected brakes today and it appears they were definitely boiling over. Front rotors look effed and now my calipers changed from a greenish/blue to dark olive green almost black color.

As per usual the S55 did not heat up. Oil temps never above 230 degrees, even on the hottest last session in which air temps were about 98 degrees. This last session also had my best laptime of the day of 1:05.35.

Sorry, no video today. Forgot that my GoPro shell is still in my E36 at Leroy's shop getting the cage finished (or just sitting there).

Looks like engine overheating is not going to be a problem with this car. Thanks for the report.

Wonder what's the IAT of the car under such environment?

When the first round of deliveries was happening last June/July, there were murmurs/rumors about some cars having struts replaced at the port before delivery. I wonder if the issue you had is related.

Not sure, mine was delivered just a tad later in August. I don't remember any unusual delays at the port. Also, I tracked mine 3-4 times before the faults started to show up. I think we maybe just messed something up with that strut at some point and the dealers/BMW policy of replacing problematic parts has seemed to work for now.

Nice to hear you didn't have code problems! I can empathize as I had many with my Z06.

What wheels/tires/offsets are you running? Look like Apex with NT01? Any spacers?

R888 265/35/19, 295/30/19 on Apex 19x9.5" ET22 and 19x10" ET25. No spacers

You still have the C7Z?

Nice wheel/tire setup!

I sold the C7Z and lucked into a GT4 spot. Hopefully it will be as solid on track as my M3 has been so far.

I do not recall any issues from anyone in our June ED Bimmerpost group related to struts despite our long days of track, autocross, and spirited driving. It was mostly cosmetic issues and a couple that were banged up during shipping including my F80

We ran our cars pretty hard for nearly two weeks with full track days at the ring and Spa without drama. We had zero heating issues as well regardless of how hard we tried. Conversely the only time the brakes got soft on me was when Pro Driver Sabine Schmitz took me for several laps around Spa chasing down and passing factory drivers in Ferrari's, Porsche, and other brands. I gave her specific instructions to not hold back and OMG can that woman drive! We would have to pull over every 3 laps for a slow cooling roll in the pits and brakes quickly recovered. Definitely the most intense hard braking I have every experienced in a M Car. Immediately after the laps with Sabine the fluid temps where still well within desired levels and the cooling system still cool to the touch. I was quite surprised and knew right then and there I would never have a problem with my mere mortal average track skills

Yes she did and she gave me a private track driving lesson for 30 minutes in the M. It was more than you would ever imagine! I even got a signed helmet to use and keep. As they say here in the forum pictures or it did not happen!

Damn. Is that for all RSR spa track days? You are almost making me wish I moved my euro delivery date to do an RSR spa day instead of one with Circuit Days

And you guys got a dry track!

Sabine was there specifically contracted for our group. She was with us over two days to do lessons, ride alongs, and host a private party for our group at her ranch. She is a blast to hang out with!
