M4 Dead Battery
So my battery is completely dead. I know it's the new Li-ion battery so regular chargers won't work. I can get the car to start by jumping it with another car but the battery will not recharge even after a short drive. Do I need to buy another battery or is there another way I can recharge the battery. And I assumed the alternator would do the job of recharging it while driving it but I guess I'm wrong?
Thanks for any help in advance |

Do you have any idea what might have depleted it so fast?

I haven't looked at the owners manual yet. I can get it to start I just don't understand how it didn't recharge. The car stays on fine once started though. It just has no power at all after I turn it off, until I jump it off again.
And I have no idea. It's been sitting for a couple of months. |

An as discussed there is a Li-ion charger that you can pickup on line. Any status updates with the dealership? Rare for a dead battery this early. |

BMW may not honor the battery with you letting it sit for months, and its a $1,000 plus battery so prepare yourself . I had a F10 550i under maintenance and warranty and was instructed to drive it more because my profile indicated I wasn't driving it enough to charge the battery in below zero weather. An they said BMW won't replace that due to it being an issue created by the driver vs. a system failure and its was even in the owners manual about driving 10 or more miles for adequate charging. Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

I will say I didn't drive it ton.. maybe 8k a yr in miles and in the winter it would be short trips as in the car wouldn't reach operating temp in -20 degree weather, so the battery discharge was a hard fight. Still I like the peace of mind of throwing it on the charger once a month in the winter overnight. |

No modern car can sit for months and not have a dead battery. The computers place a constant drain on the battery and manufacturers don't design systems assuming that the cars will sit for months. If you are in this situation than it is your responsibility to place it on a trickle charger. I suspect BMW will likely replace the battery this time but as others have said it is about $1200 to replace these puppies. This is not a manufacturer defect. Also read your manual before you have a problem.

I have received a "Charging malfunction; battery is not recharging" warning two days in a row. I'm going to call the dealership first thing in the morning and schedule an appointment to have them check it out.

Take it to the dealer and tell them you had a dead battery and you charged it. I probably wouldn't tell them you jumped it with another car. Your under warranty so you'll have no issues with replacement |

Any battery would drain out if the car is left to sit for a number of months.
However, the battery should recharge when the car is driven after a jump start. If it doesn't, then that's a problem with the battery or charging circuitry. They can't expect you to change batteries after each full discharge. |

Idealy you should connect your battery to a charger like the CTEK Lithium US charger. But if you have don't have the ability to get a charger hooked to your car (like in my case), just disconnect the negative battery terminal if you plan to have the car sitting for some time. I did that last time for 3.5 months and the car started up right away when I reconnected the battery terminal.

In the past-Lead acid/glass mat batteries have a normal discharge with no use. Additionally previous generations of BMW's had far larger designed draws on the cars which is/was considered normal for necessary functions the car performed while shut off. F8x vehicles have a very very small designed draw as well as much quicker shut down procedure when compared to previous models and lithium batteries have a super small rate of discharge when not in use. That being said-I would drive the car to the dealer and let them handle it as it will probably be a warranty issue anyway. The price of the battery is pretty high if for some reason it's on you to pay for it.
