Question! - Bilstein PSS9 / 10 / B16 rear shock install

Just confirming that I installed these correctly, the rear diagram indicates there is a "tube" that I omitted because the OEM steel "tube" does not fit the diameter of the Bilstein Shock.

Mine has a turn dual front and rear, 1-9. Easy for both. However height adjustment was a biaach in the rest and we have to adjust height off the car and then reinstall spring. However, that is the pss9 for an audi so maybe something is different on yours. See attached picture front/rear.[IMG][/IMG]
1= hardest, 9 = softest, and reference point for readout is straight up/top of dial (12 a clock). At least for mine. Pic 1 front, 2 rear.

Pull the side trunk liners and you should see the adjusters on the top of the shock.

They're not installed, I see the top adjusters similar to my current konis but I don't feel clicks when I spin the top knob. There are no numbers on the dial either, like the front has.

I'm missing the rear knobs so I have to guess.

getting a slight clunk from the rear suspension over highway speed bumps. Bilstein doesn't have the best instructions for install. Anyone install Bilstein pss shocks recently?

Hmm looks like they want you to cut the foam from the OE top mounting washer/nut combo and reuse it.... I made my own rubber washers for this purpose but this is probably the cause of my noise.

Still wondering about the part that I reference in the diagram in the OP, the spacer/sleeve piece*

I think you need a steel 12mm ID sleeve there, like on top-adjust Konis otherwise the lower mount will eventually pop up through the trunk hole and the rod end will start destroying stuff or itself. Stock is 10mm and won't fit those Konis or TC Kline, Dinan and similar, maybe the bilstein. What is the rod diameter at that point?

Powerflex and others make 12mm versions of their upper rear shock mounts for top-adjust applications, I do not know if they sell the sleeve separately. I really really would not drive it without the sleeve in place.

Here is Dinan's version of 12mm, they also sell the 10mm. Cant find the Powerflex at the moment but they are 75 or so for street yellow poly.

edit: I would also not reuse the stock foam mounts, they are horrible and squishy.

OK here is the Pflex

you are totally right, holy shit! I'm hoping that I can find something that will work at a local hardware store. This actually happened on my old E92 with konis. Weird that the stock one won't fit, i live a few blocks from dinan so I'm hoping they can help me out if I can't find one at home depot or similar

the stock one fit my dinan konis fine but wouldn't fit on the bilstein shocks. Musty be 12mm? I've driven about 50 miles on them and something didn't feel great. Thanks for the help, I'm such a suspension noob.

I asked you in your for sale post about the rear Koni's. You said that they are regular single shaft externally adjustable. That's why they fit the OEM upper shock mount with 10mm sleeve. For dual shaft shocks that are internally adjustable you need 12mm sleeve. Dinan sells them, as well as PowerFlex and AkG.

hmm I actually don't know if they fit the stock shocks as I bought the car with full dinan suspension. I just know that my Dinan shocks have a smaller shaft than my Bilstein shocks.

So what diameter did the top of the rod end up being? It sounds like even 12mm was too small.

Dinan are just custom re-valved yellow Koni internally ajdustable with 10mm shaft.
The externally adjustable Koni's are white and they have 12mm shaft, just like the Bilstein externally adjustable.
Just get the 12mm sleeves. The rest is interchangeable.

whoops sorry, I just assumed that these fell into the category of externally adjustable but should have read closer, these are just rebranded koni yellows as you can see in the pic in my FS ad.
