Wife got rear ended in the M235i yesterday (pictures included of car but not wife =D)
Updated on page 2 - My M3 is now crashed also and sitting in the same shop as the M235 =(
First things first, thankfully she is OK. She did not have much pain yesterday, but today she has been having some pretty bad lower back pain. We had a few pain killers from a dental surgery a while back which helped, but we plan on going to a doctor asap to make sure everything is OK. All you happily married guys will know how scared I was when she called, and I am just so thankful that she is ok, and also thankful that we chose a safe car like the BMW 2 series. She was driving home yesterday around 3 in the afternoon, and I had just gotten off the phone with her. I had been at the Keenland Concourse, the largest car show of the year around here, and we were both in great moods ready to enjoy our Saturday night. Within minutes of hanging up she called back and told me that she had crashed the car. Of course as you can imagine my mind started racing and imagining the worse case scenarios, but luckily she told me that she was fine, just a little shaken up, and that the guy that hit her was being nice and cooperative. I told her to call the police, and I jumped in my car and headed her way. When I arrived I was very surprised to see the disparity in damage between the two vehicles. Although the damage to the 2er is pretty bad, the worst we have ever had in a crash, the truck looks much worse. My guess is that the truck will the totaled. The police arrived shortly thereafter, and my wife and I sat in the car and discussed the preceding events while the officer wrote up a report. My wife explained that the man in the truck was weaving through traffic and following her too close (to the point that she couldn't even see his bumper in her rear view mirror), and when they came upon traffic that was backed up he was unable to stop as quickly as her thus the collision. He could have of course driven around her onto the shoulder, which it appears that he did attempt to do, albeit a bit too late. I was of course very angry at the man, but thankfully he was being cooperative and courteous, so I did the same. After about twenty minutes the officer handed us the report and explained how to move forward and we were on our way home. All in all everything went smoothly and worked out about as good as possible for what it was. I am just very thankful that my wife is ok, that we have an M235i, and that it's a lease! I am hoping we can get a decent rental car. I would love to get a new body Mustang! I will post a few pictures of the accident below. My questions are as follows: 1. Do you guys think that I can turn this into somewhat of a positive situation like maybe getting the M performance diffuser/rear bumper (not sure what it's called) installed or any other "upgraded" parts? EDIT: If you guys have any suggestions of parts to upgrade to please post them as well! 2. How much do you think the damage will be $$$ wise? I think it may actually be over $10k, but lets see who can get the closest down to the penny! Oh, one other thing I forgot to mention above. The wife had actually parked her car in the garage Friday when she got home from work with the rear end about a foot outside of the garage and closed the garage door on the RW Carbon carbon fiber spoiler. Surprisingly so it actually did no damage to the spoiler what so ever, and actually broke the spoiler away from the bumper on each end. I was very surprised at how strong the RW Carbon spoiler was (big to them) as our garage door is pretty heavy and it actually broke the 3m double sided tape away rather than the spoiler. When we had installed the spoiler about a month back we made sure to do all the necessary prep work and also did a great job of applying the 3m tape on both sides of the spoiler the same way the OEM one comes. Anyway, that is why it is not in the picture, and thankfully it wasn't on as it may have been damaged in the accident. Anyway, enough rambling, here are the pictures. Huge, huge to BMW for engineering not only great driving cars, but SAFE cars that we can trust with our loved ones behind the wheel. This is an aspect of our cars that we may not think about often, but these cars are just as safe as they are fun to drive and look at. My wife was completely stopped, and it is our guess that the man in the truck was going anywhere from 20-25 MPH when he hit her. Picture with my M3 keeping watch. As you can see the truck sustained much greated damage. Last edited by Db750; 01-04-2016 at 11:48 AM.. |

Firstly, glad to hear everyone is ok. Cars can be fixed/replaced.
Secondly, that sucks and I'm sorry to hear this happened. On your question #1, usually insance companied will let you upgrade for the cost difference. Just be upfront with them. |

Wow, you just have not had good luck with this car at all huh? Glad she's OK.
That M235i messed up that truck bad! That's really surprising.

I would say that the wheel/tire is pretty much flush with the fender, but I wanted to wide rear tire with at least a bit of concavity, so that is what it looks like. I think with a drop it would look perfect, but the car would get destroyed even faster if it was closer to the ground. Thank you for your response! Yes, we have not been having the best of luck with this car. Not sure if you read the whole article I typed, but I mentioned that my wife actually closed the garage door on the trunk of the car and broke the CF spoiler off LOL! I am trying to imagine how she will manage to break the CF mirror caps. Most likely will catch one on the garage door frame while pulling in not only breaking the cap but also snapping off the entire mirror assembly! |

Let me start off by saying that I'm glad she is ok!!! I've been in a pretty bad accident myself in a BMW and they are phenomenal cars. Amazing engineering at work to keep us all safe.
At the end of the day its just a car and can be replaced and I'm glad you are taking a positive approach. Definitely upgrade if you can, just be open with your insurance. Damage doesn't look too bad but until they take it apart who knows. It could easily be around 10k worth. Good luck man I wish you guys the best. |

Yeah man I got hit so hard it turned it into a damn Lexus! Actually I have seen this happen in several other rear end crashes on BMW's where the lens breaks off the tail light. Other than a few small pieces of the red plastic I really don't know where the rest of it went. The entire tail light seems to still be working, and I think it actually looks pretty cool without the red. I'll post a picture below. Quote:
Thank you, Mike! I will check with the wife and see if she is cool with me posting her bikini pictures on an online car forum full of randy young men. In the mean time I can 100% assure you that she is just as stunning after the accident as she was before. |

Picture of white line tail light. Maybe I'll just remove the red lense on the other one.

Man, I started a rant about my 22 year old curbing my wheel a week ago...
Your wife topped that big time.. I hope she's ok. That car has $9,500 in damage would be my guess...

Glad to hear she is okay ... and the Mrs :P And the wheels for that matter. Make sure you get the depreciated damage as well for the major repair work. Then turn it into a track monster since it will have a damaged record!

I'd quite like to see pictures of the wife too. You could always ditch both the car AND the wife... and buy yourself a sexy 2 seater instead.

I've been pondering this thread and concluded that, actually, it was your car which got rear-ended, but the thread title sounds adventurous.

Ok, you took the same type of hit as I did. It is hard to tell from picture but my damage was over $11,000 so I expect yours will be in the same ball park.
