M2 anticipated weight?
My M4 is apparently somewhere around 3,500 lbs. One of the things I loved about my prior 1M was that it was approx 300 lbs. lighter than that, which I could definitely feel every time I drove the car (along with the shorter wheelbase). I also understand that the M235i (upon which the M2 will be loosely based) is similarly around 3,500 lbs.
From what I have read, the M2 is expected to be "significantly" lighter than the 235, but what do the experts and "insiders" say on this issue? I am hoping that the lighter weight, shorter wheelbase, and maybe a warmed over tune will strike the perfect balance between the M4's freight train thrust and the 1M's responsiveness and nimbleness. Not to mention the exhaust note... |

My prediction is 3400 lbs with low options. I'd be happy if I can get it down to 3300-3350 lbs after some mods |

Here we go again, M2 weight thread. I don't think it will be significantly lighter than the 235i but we will know soon.

Could even be heavier, it's bigger that's for sure so where are they saving the weight? Are the M3 parts lighter? If so it can't be much, it's not going to be some stripped down lightweight, remember it needs to be a sensible price, the one thing I’d like is a bigger fuel tank!

Juggling with curb weight
The Porsche Cayman GT4 features stock a fuel tank with a capacity of 54 liter. However, Porsche offers, for the GT4 only, free of charge a fuel tank of 64 liter (Porsche option #085). So that's a range extender bumping the fuel capacity from 54 liter (14.27 gallons) to 64 liter (16.91 gallons), i.e. 10 liter (2.64 gallons). Except if mistaken, the larger GT4 fuel tank has no impact on boot space. I guess Porsche will have a race-track related explanation for this smaller/larger fuel tank offer.
On the other hand, the offer might have an additional reason. As we know, the official curb weight (unladen mass) figure includes weight of fuel at nominal tank capacity. Hence, for the official GT4 curb weight figure, Porsche only needs to take into account the weight of 54 liter of fuel (instead of 64 liter) ...despite the fact that most GT4s will likely feature the optional 64 liter fuel tank. So BMW, fit the M2 stock with a 30 liter fuel tank and offer - free of charge - an optional 52 or 60 liter tank, to further reduce the official curb weight figure.

Isn't the 1M slightly lighter than the 135? I think they did this with the combination of no moonroof, the aluminum suspension from the M3 and and I believe they took out a lot of sound deadening material. Seriously, I can hear every thud, thunk, clink, bonk, snap, pop and other noises from the 1M underpinnings. Definitely not a quiet car. I hope they do this with the M2, contributes to the hard core feel of the car.

I don't see where this 200 lbs weight reduction will come from that people are predicting. The only major savings are no sunroof and aluminum suspension parts. Brakes will be larger and heavier. More cooling. More bodywork. Bigger wheels and tires.

I don't expect any weight reduction.
Sorry I don't see where BMW can save weight without making the car a lot expensiver. Brakes will be at least 20lbs heavier. Suspension, differential, bigger wheels again 20-30lbs. We can be happy when the M2 has the same weight as the M235i.

The manual M235i weighs 3505 lbs. That's a 35 lb difference. That sucks. |

But the front ride-height might increase a tiny bit.
