Can the key be changed?
Hypothetical situation. If the key to the car is compromised. Can the actual assembly where you insert the key be replaced (or reprogrammed) so that you need a new set of keys.
does anyone know?

If a key is lost or stolen you can have the car reprogrammed to not accept the lost key. You can buy a replacement key and have it programmed for the car. You do not need a new set of keys as the one in your possession can be programmed to continue working with the car. The most I've heard is 3 keys programmed with the car at any one time but I am unsure of the actual limit (for those that want to buy spare keys).
In the past on old 7 series there was a limit of about 10 keys that could be associated with the car over its life. If you needed to replace more than that you had to buy a new assembly for the car. |

I would assume that they could just reprogram the system for a new key...
Of course you would need to show your owner documents... Probably also the vehicle title |

In addition to new fobs (reprogrammed to the car), I suppose you should change out the driver's side door locks to prevent entry. Even if the suspect cannot drive away the car, he would still have access to the car's interior.
I assume you could get the whole assembly replaced, which should come with replacement metal key blade fob inserts (replacement fobs do not come with the metal key blade fob inserts. edit: realoem lists the part as catch with key, left p/n 51217162427, retailing for about $100 and SLIDE-IN KEY (CODE) p/n 51217069547 $29.85

Well see that's the thing, the digital part is easy, but there is the laser cut physical key for the door that I assume has to be made special for the car. If they replace the door lock, then I assume I would have to get a new insert for key that wasn't lost.

I assume so, they have to be specially ordered as a matching set. So its really a 2-part solution, fobs and key blades/lock assembly. Luckily, there is only 1 lock assembly to worry about

I forgot about the physical key which would need a new door, glove box, trunk assembly and two new key inserts. One for each fob.
Would you guys even worry about the physical key part? I live in a large enough city that I would only replace the digital fob unless the key was stolen near my work or house. It would take a thief a lifetime to try the physical key in all the e9x BMWs in LA only to find, if hes lucky, an iPod in the car. |
