For those of you who have done an oil change themselves on a F30 335i.

Did one last Friday on my Dad's 2013 F30 335i. I used my beloved Race Ramps which are prob. the best item yet purchased for my garage.

1. What's the deal with the drain plug flap being fixed to the pan cover. On E9X's, it was very easy for this piece to pop out and be out of the way.

2. What's the deal with the drain plug being on the buttom of the oil pan vs. the back like most cars. Created a huge mess when draining the oil as 7 quarts comes out fast and furious. Any tips or way around this for mechanics using ramps. I know a lift would be ideal, but that's not an option for me.

Does no one here do any wrenching or even an oil change on their own?

Done several oil changes on my 13 335i. The flap is a minor PITA unless you bend it all the way back several times to try and crease the seam so it stay mostly out of the way. I dont experience any problem with draining even with only the front on my ramps. its no worse than most of the others I've worked on.

Appreciate the response. When draining does it not come out aggressively for you? Or did you do a slow drip leaving the plug slightly threaded?

LOL! In the short time i've been on this forum I've discovered that a majority of people are scared of doing basic stuff like this. I didnt have the issue you described. Maybe since I have xDrive the underbody is a bit different, i dont remember having any issues with oil going everywhere and I used ramps. In any case Is it possible to physically hold the flap out of the way while the oil is drianing?

The oil comes out quick especially when warm. I had an oil collector and tray.

Having the oil filter near the top of engine makes the oil change quick and simple. I drained for 10mins and put in 6.5ish litres

The ls7 I recently drained was a b*tch with two drain plugs and a filter that needed an oil filter removal tool which was difficult to fit.

People "wrench" on their cars here, we just do not answer idiotic questions regarding basic oil changes...asking about a flaps or drain plugs .

Replaced almost every type fluid on my E30 this weekend (Engine, Tranny, Diff, Coolant, Brake, P/S), an F30s basic oil change is a walk in the park brother.

Actually my fellow NYer Mr. 1987 I have to slap you down on that one, I do my own oil changes and if the location of the drain plug being on bottom has the potential to make a mess I need to know about it and prep accordingly. Pardon me while I go Al Pacino, "Scent of a woman" to your earlier post

I seen a lot of idiotic questions in my time, asking for advice on how to best remove the oil without making a mess is more worthy than most.

Yeah, the oil does pour out quickly- always does- Gravity has that effect!

But if using a oil drain pan of some sort and worried about splashing, just drop a couple of slightly wadded up paper towels in the bottom of the drain pan- no splash.

Edit : did you fit on in your car? Does it protrude out or down? Any photos of it attached?

I second the fumoto drain valve. I've had them on all our vehicles, including heavy equipment (excavator & dozer) with never a problem for what must be 10 years now. Had to do a little file work on the steel support to install on our 328D. Tucks nicely away and doesn't protrude. Not enough clearance for the nipple version.
