Just Test Drove This

Been looking at 335s and M3s. I have driven several of each and jumped on this listing when it came online. Good mileage and price...

http://www.raychevrolet.com/Used-200...IL/vd/29387696

When I test drove it, it became clear to me that this car had a tune. Punched it at 20mph and was doing 70mph in no time while the car stuggled for traction the whole way. The other 335s I drove were not like this.

Got back from the test drive...looked up how to pull the command screen up for JB4 and low and behold - it has JB4.

If it were stock, I probabably would have purchased it, but I gotta say...that JB4 power is pretty ridiculous...to the point where it made me not want to buy the car. My wife needs to drive the car and when it gets into boost it's just like a freaking wild hog. My wife would probably wrap it around a tree. I might too.

It's an interesting car for someone who wants to buy a low mileage car with JB4. I don't think it was in an accident. I couldn't see any evidence of paintwork. I drove it for a sold 20min with no error codes/anything.

Maybe this is a forum member's old car?

I would stay away, 4 owners is too many for my liking.

I'd like to add though that if a 335 with a Jb4 is too much, you might want to avoid test driving any M3's. I'm sure a 335 stock will be a good amount of power that your wife can manage

If you buy a 335 and decide to JB4 it, you can always put it in map 0 when your wife is driving. It takes 2 seconds to change maps from the steering wheel.

To me e46 M3 power delivery is apples/oranges to 335 w/JB4.

Screw that dealership. I wanted to check out a 135i they had and set up an appointment to drive it. The day before I was going to drive down from Madison, WI they raised the price of the car $4k. They never ended up selling it as it's now at a different dealership in the area.

I am still interested in the car, but the concept of buying a previously modded car is hard for me to deal with.

I saw that one...red 135 with tan interior...I think it had the 7dct in it??

That other dealer is trying to sell it for a lot more.

There is no way of telling if a car was previously modded and most would remove aftermarket items to recoup some money. Don't assume that driving a used car that is stock has always been that way.

+1

I'm actually quite surprised the original owner didn't remove the JB4 and just sell it for a few bucks.

I would say "most" of the used 135's/335's out there were modded at one time or another and were returned to stock condition prior to sell or trade in so your chances of picking up an unmolested specimen is pretty slim unless you know the previous owner personally. Just peruse the classified section and see how many owners are parting out performance parts and returning their cars to stock condition so I wouldn't be too hung up about the car being modded before.

Look on the bright side, you'll be getting a JB4 with perhaps a backend flash already installed plus you might even hit the jackpot and the car might even have either RB's or VTT's already in there!

Carpe Diem

buy it, and get an extended warranty on it through them and before you leave, make sure to document the JB4 on there. They will have to honor any warranty work the JB4 causes because that is how they sold the car to you.

Knew a guy who bought a car in this similar situation but with upgraded turbos. Upgraded turbos failed, and after a decently lengthy battle, the dealership had to replace with new upgraded turbos since thats how it was sold and warrantied

I find it cheaper to find a car within 10-15 hours away and fly out to drive it back rather than purchase in WI. Sometimes you can get lucky in IL but the selection for nicely optioned cheaper used bimmers is better out east and down south.

Well I know what you mean with the torque difference. Btw are you talking about test driving the e46 or the e92?

Do you know how hard its gonna be to find a N54 that wasn't previously modded (or at least driven pretty hard)? These cars were designed for this. Just because its stock when you buy it doesn't mean it wasn't modded before the previous owner sold it/traded it in.

If you want a unmolested car best look at the N52's.

What?
IMO the 335's are one the easiest performance cars to find garaged, not modded and well taken care of.

#1 - You obviously have never driven a fast car. JB4 is needed to just wake these cars up...pretty lazy performer stock IMO.

#2 - Either remove the JB4 (bad idea, as it will be slower), or just put it in Map 0 or Map 4 when the wife is driving (good idea).

I'd not consider that 335i for other reason: no sports package which means no excellent sport seats nor sports suspensions bits.

People trade in or sell modded cars everyday. My friend traded his in and had mods in it. I would stay away from any 07 335i since those are the most troublesome. If you have doubt walk away! Trust me don't ever look back and say man I should've done it. I would get third party warranty regardless if its JB4 or not. I wouldn't personally want a modded car especially if it had that many owners.

What '07 specific issues would have not already have been resolved in 60k miles and 8 years? Though I call BS on the whole '07 is the bad year thing. It is the oldest and the highest sales year of the N54...not a shocker there are more owners with issues in their '07.
