driving year round?
So, my thoughts:
Specifically for New England, how many of us actually drive our F80/82 year round? In general, when topics like this are discussed, people from Florida chime in that they drive year round, and the occasional Canadian throws poutine at everyone and says the M3 can handle any winter ever. That having been said... Are you not disgusted by the mere idea of snow and salt INSIDE the car? I don't own a garage so maybe it's just me. My winter car is a 2001 Audi Quatro at the moment, and I'm thinking it's worth just keeping at this point instead of getting the car filthy over the winter.

Winter mats if you are worried about snow/salt inside your car and the pedals can be cleaned.

I drove mine through this past winter, though I do have a 2004 Trailblazer for "emergencies". I had an old set of rims from my wife's e93 that I put snow tires on - the offset makes them a little wider in the back, but not bad.
Car drove fine, though I was never on the road in more than a couple inches of snow. |

I'm in New England and have the 640M wheels with the Contis. Didn't drive it in the heavy snow 'cause I was laid up. But it did see some snow. No problem. My 3rd M. All year round DD.

Back many years ago, I tried with b4 and b5 Audi s4's. Had snow wheels / tires. I only did it for ~2 years. The awd got the job done, was a lot of fun. The issue was ground clearance. Just not enough. You worry about high siding the car, or destroying front or read bumper covers / splitter. I gave up, got an SUVs for the winter, never looked back. Last 2 m3s, hasn't even crossed my mind to count on them for the winter. Especially after last winter!

I think i'll keep the Avant for winter then. I have half a mind to put a 2 inch lift kit and some knobby tires on.

If your going to see snow and ice I would invest in a good set of snow tires and go easy, if you have been driving in snow for awhile you are fine. If your new to snow then this car would be a serious danger with OEM tires IMO.

More a cleanliness and Torque issue for me. As well as a concern about having a Corolla slide into me at a stop light. I've seen it happen here in Boston over the last few years.

As for the inside I would buy a set of weathertech trays for the floor in the winter. The rest will be fine. |

You must have been sitting on reply for a while, I edited to sound less like a dick already. I would certainly invest in Snow Tires if I decided to drive it. Hakka R2's

My M3 is going to remain firmly parked this winter. 5 feet of snow on the ground in Maine last year...My snow tires say "4Runner" |

I had WRG3's on my last STI, got through anything, I had hakkapalitas on my other car, and they were even crazier. Nokian makes the best winter tires in existence. I did decide to keep the Audi, and my house in Hingham is 100 yards from the Commuter Rail, so My driving will be limited anyway.

WR's are better in the dry, Hakka's are better in the fluff. For the 7-8 times a year you'll drive in super nasty stuff up here, the WR's are probably a better bet. I wanted Hakka's because I love driving in the worst weather I can find. Driving Bans are my favorite thing ever. But if you're not, generally speaking, insane, the WR's are a way better winter daily tire. My only concern is that with a RWD car, i'd want the absolute safest tires for it, which are technically the Hakka's. Except he's right, they don't have as good a speed rating.

I have the same concerns. I'm very comfortable driving in the snow, had a firebird in the winter once so no big deal. I don't plan on driving the M4 when the conditions are awful, but for the decent days I'm not worried. I mostly just don't want any road debris to cause damage. I saw a ton of it last year before I got the M4.

I drove my rwd 228 m sport straight through the winter last year (snow tires)...the one thing that took a huge beating was the windshield from the constant salt/sand on the road. No matter how far you try to stay behind someone, another person always wants to jump between and spray you with sand.
We all know the winter we had last year, I didn't get stuck once, and didn't miss a single day of work with a 13mi commute each way...Not sure how much less ground clearance an m3/4 has though. Snow got up to my bumper pretty quickly. |

+2 ON THE WR's, I have also used Blizzak's every winter on my E46 RWD and never had a problem....Also keep in mind BMW's with good snow tires regardless of which one does a good job preventing you from losing control.(for those worried of driving in snow). Although I am sure most of us on the crazy en just turn off DSC and have a BLAST!
I would also recommend Michelin Pilot Ice tyres. They were by far the quietest and performance oriented as well. My F80 will sit in the garage this winter so no worries there. I will say if we get anything as bad as last year, I would keep your ride locked up, wayy too many ppl out there driving with bad tires and sliding everywhere. Last thing you want as someone here said id you sitting at a red light or stop sign and someone just slide right in to you. Happens way too many times as we all know in New England. If you have AWD then all-season tyres or any winters will do the trick. On a side note if your looking for good winter tires on the cheap, check out Federal winter tyres, they are made by Goodyear and fo the price you pay and what they are it is a good deal, especially if your commute is not long in the winter. Cheers and stay safe this winter out there LADS!! |

Its not so much my car's ability to drive in the snow I'm worried about, more the other people driving they're cars around.
That being said, keep the Audi. |
